February 8, 201214 yr You're conflating fact with opinion. I know you're being hyperbolic, but c'mon man. Are you telling me you think Gingrich, Santorum, or Paul would stand a better chance against President Obama in the general election? I know you're smarter than that Habib.
February 8, 201214 yr What are Romney's moderate positions? In past elections, which "moderate" and establishment-backed candidates have struggled to win the GOP nod? I would say McCain struggled because he was seen as too moderate. And trying to cater to the far right by choosing Palin as VP cost him any chance at winning.
February 8, 201214 yr Author Big difference in voters in Republican primaries/caucuses and voters in the general election. Romney is not conservative enough for the Republican primary voter and that is exactly why he has the best chance of beating Obama ... but he has to find a way to win the nomination first.I would agree with this, but if he doesn't have those guys he is going to need to steal a ton of the "moderates" he is reportedly loved by. Also, what do you think of the fact that in '08 Romney did an excellent job in Colorado but four years later he lost the state?
February 8, 201214 yr Author I don't know what to make of the Santorum wins yet. Possibilities: he's just taking the place of Gingrich as the anti-Romney choice; he just plays well in these states (like Iowa) and Romney didn't crush him with ads; apathy has set in (turnout down, which usually helps Romney), but maybe his "inevitability" is hurting him, especially in more low key states (eventual nominee rarely makes it through undefeated). I think the thing to watch is Gingrich's polling in the South, if he maintains leads there super Tuesday could be interesting. If Santorum replaces him across the board this race could heat up again. I wonder where and against who Romney will spend his money going forward, as it seems he relies pretty heavily on crushing his opponents with spending. To me, it shows how much apathy the GOP core has towards a Romney campaign. Throughout the entire race they have went from candidate to candiate looking for someone to pick other than him. How are the Super Tuesday polls looking? I tune in and out of this race as more interesting things come to surface.

Also, what do you think of the fact that in '08 Romney did an excellent job in Colorado but four years later he lost the state? The R's will fall in line behind their candidate. Generating the turnout of a better right wing candidate might be a challenge but there aren't any Republican primary voters planning to jump ship in the fall and vote for Obama.
February 8, 201214 yr Are you telling me you think Gingrich, Santorum, or Paul would stand a better chance against President Obama in the general election? I know you're smarter than that Habib. It's still an opinion. Facts are things that have actually happened. You might have facts to support your opinion, but until the final votes are tallied we are talking about opinions. I would say McCain struggled because he was seen as too moderate. And trying to cater to the far right by choosing Palin as VP cost him any chance at winning. That was well after the primary. He cruised to the nomination despite his heresies.

February 8, 201214 yr Republicans clearly excited about their choices this year. What was the average turnout last night? Three percent?

Also, what do you think of the fact that in '08 Romney did an excellent job in Colorado but four years later he lost the state? Not really that big of a deal IMO. He campaigned there much much more in 08' then he did this time around. One thing I'll give to Santorum is he's one hell of a hard-worker. It seems like every state he's put in significant time in he's won.

But that wasn't the first time McCain tried to win the nomination. He fell into the nomination due to lack of a strong alternative and his "rightness" was questioned often.
February 8, 201214 yr ^To me at least, Santorum comes off as the most "average joe" candidate out of the four. I think that appeals to a lot of people these days, regardless of how crazy their ideas and beliefs are.
February 8, 201214 yr Author Not really that big of a deal IMO. He campaigned there much much more in 08' then he did this time around. That's what I got from it too. Romney, however, campaigned hard in Colorado and to a lesser degree Minnesota, and the stinging losses cost him any momentum from his two straight victories in Florida and Nevada prior to Tuesday Romney's campaign appeared to consider Colorado its best chance of victory Tuesday. He canceled stops in Minnesota scheduled for Monday to concentrate on Colorado, where he spent caucus night Romney, who won big in the state's 2008 caucuses, has been working Colorado since last summer and arguably has the strongest structure in the state
February 8, 201214 yr In past elections, which "moderate" and establishment-backed candidates have struggled to win the GOP nod? Would Rudy be considered establishment-backed?
