What Penalties would you like to see "added on"?

Featured Replies

CB,

You are correct, but it's not a chop block. It's a block below the waist. A chop block happens in the FBZ when a player is blocking an opponent and another player contacts the opponent at the knee or below.

The play you described is a different rule.

Maybe you should brush up yourself befor

e throwing stones.

Cut Block, Chop block Doesnt matter the KHSAA Officials dont call the penalty correctly. Either get rid of the penalty or enforce it. I have seen to many kids get hurt because of lazy officials dont want to make a stand.

Sml007, keep your 2 cents.

I believe we need less rules. Half of the rules in the rule book aren't called anyway. Not one official officiates the game the same. Officials need more training and need to have consequences when they are terrible. Also, they should be rewarded when they are very good. In NKY I would say that a majority of the officials are decent, but some need to take their significant others out on dates on Friday nights in the fall rather than have "powertrip" Friday and control the fate of High School kids. My 2 cents!

If they were to get rid of a rule. IMO the worst rule in football in loss of down and 15 yards for offensive pass interference!

I am sorry I tend o disagree. I think there are some very good officials. I just think the different regions of the state officials call the game different. That is not really their fault. They try to call the game according to the style of football they see.

That is fine. I was not insulting officials. I just think more training is needed and games should be called the same. The ways to do this is to teach them. Officials have different styles. I would say 95% of officials do a decent job. THe other 5% need to be fired.

I said, 'In NKY I would say that a majority of the officials are decent.' I believe this 100%. I also believe some officials need to quit or not be scheduled for games. NO matter how long they have been an official. Officials are human and can make mistakes. THAT IS FINE!!!

It is when a small few are arrogant and provoke kids. Remember the key words...SMALL FEW... I just think that their needs to be consequences for bad officiating. Not a bad call... Bad officiating and Costly errors. Players are ejected, coaches can get in trouble, but what happens when officials screws up. In my experiences...NOTHING!

I think that cut blocking should be legal period, it is legal in college and the pros it is a way that smaller player can find success. As far as using in a shotgun offense most refs tell me if the cut starts on the snap of the football the cut block is legal. if a player steps back or forward before he begans cutting it is illegal, that is the way it was explained in all the games I was involved in this year.

Otech, cut blocking is not legal in high school for player safety reasons. You will note that in NCAA cut blocks are only legal under certain circumstances, which I am not an expert on, and won't try to explain. Suffice to say there are some illegal low blocks in NCAA. As physical ability and skills increase from HS to NCAA to NFL, certain rules are modified, or eliminated. Each level has it's own rule making body that makes decisions based on what is appropriate for the level. Be advised that rules do evolve with time and experience. Here are links to a list of rulechanges for HS and NCAA over many years. http://football.refs.org/rules/

SML007, you are not the only one who thinks the penalty for OPI is too severe.

sml...

There are insufficient numbers of officials now. If you attached those kind of requirements/responsibilities to it, you'd better dramatically increase pay !!

Officiating is not a real job. It's really more a "hobby" (perhaps "labor of love") in which the official's pay is little more than the cost of keeping current (clinics and seminars), uniforms and travel time.

My opinion is... you take the bad with the good and go on. Who else will do it ?

:sssh:

So it is safe for a 150 lb kid to have to block head on a 270 lb division 1 athlete? I don't think so. I believe that if the technique is taught correctly on how to cut block and how to defend yourself it is all the same. I don't really see a reason for it in the open feild but i believe on the line it should be completely legal. JMO.

Hey-Ref I think I know you? PM me.

Regarding the missed field goal issue...

Consider this scenario: Team "A" has the ball first and ten from team "B"s 12 yd line...team "B" records a sack at the 20...next two plays, 2 more sacks back to the 35...On 4th down team "A" can either run a play (but they would have to get inside the 20, not a good option), punt (could be returned, shanked, or go into the endzone - though there is a possibility that the punt could pin team "B" inside the 20), or try a field goal (might get 3 points; will DEFINITELY put "B" on their 20 if FG is missed)...this last option in effect negates the last two sacks by the defense. If "A" wants to go for three points and misses, then "B" should be rewarded for its defensive effort and their offense should get the ball at the 35.

In one sense though, I could ask, why "reward" a defensive team that let the offensive team get to its 12 in the FIRST place?

Maybe the offense fumbled or snapped the ball over the punter's head...regardless, I think you unnecessarily offset the 2 sacks...if you want to try to score three points you should not get a free touchback on a missed attempt.

Because you're reading this thread, you're obviously interested in football rules, so...

If you would like to become a football official, NOW is a great time to begin preparing for the '06 season. Rules study groups are forming now. (July is not too late to start, but January is better!)
