He was mediocre at best in high school. Sprouted as you say during the Devoroes league. A very very late bloomer.

This discussion would include high school which is when he was at best average, more of a Devoroe League surprise to everyone.

 

I just looked it up and he is in the CCH Hall of Fame. Did he get put in the CCH HOF for something other than basketball? Otherwise, he must have been better than mediocre.

I wasn't sure when he graduated. Didn't Romes get a tryout of some sort with the Denver Nuggets? I remember hearing that but not sure if it is just one of those rumors or if it is true?

I think that may have been PJ Thelen who got the tryout. Romes could not get a try out for the Chicken Nuggets, but was a McDonald's All-american nominee and he was all region his senior year and a two year starter.

:lol: I have to say I am a little surprised at the comments in this thread about a CCH Hall of Famer. He also is #3 all time in assists at Thomas More.

He won't win any popularity contest, but around 1979-1981 time frame, Don Turney was a dominant player. Went on to play at Marshall and was a late round draft pick in the NBA draft.

Did not play in 1979. Transferred in and sat out. Only played 80-81.

From what I understand, PJ had a few try outs. I was always told it was with the Hawks & maybe the Jazz, but I could be mistaken.

Bob Romes graduated in 1980. He was good in high school and good at TMC. He was REALLY good after that when he played in the Deveroes league.

 

Sounds a lot like his son, Michael.

I believe he started at Latin and finished at CCH. Played varsity for both I am pretty sure. Latin School's best teams ever were when he played there. I think they may have won 20 games against a real schedule one season when Stowers played at Latin.

At today's Cincinnati Moeller vs. CovCath Frosh and JV games at CovCath, the discussion got around to who was the best players to play Basketball at CovCath and where did they attend college at, from the 1950's, 60's and 70's!

Randy Cooper is who Cooper HS is named after! Jimmy Cooper #13 was indeed the best point guard I have ever seen play for CovCath! What he could be with a basketball in his hands.

That is interesting. I have never heard of someone starting at CCH or any other high school and then going to Latin School. Latin School has accepted students after 8th grade (versus the more usual 5th, 6th or 7th grade), but I never heard of Latin School accepting a student from another high school.
