Pretty Good crowd on the hill for a Tuesday night.

NCC is going to continue to struggle against physical teams because they are young in the middle and thin on the perimeter. I can see Evan Morse playing more and more, he has done a nice job all year and gives them some toughness. Can't understand the inconsistancy I've seen this year from this team. One minute they're making the extra pass and being unselfish, the next minute their jacking up 3's and making other poor decisions. I think they'll be there at the end if they find a leader, or are willing to follow one.

I think that if something doesn't change, New Cath will struggle the rest of the year. They are a team full of good but not real good players. They do not have the "bell cow" who you can count on having a strong outing every night. Next year that could be Beuter and Mcdonald but right now that guy doesn't exist. No one wants to be negative but there are realities.

The guards are turnover prone and can't really defend well. (They should play more zone) Besides there is no real third guard. I do not understand why the Pangallo kid is not given a chance to spell the other two. I also think the Franzen boy could provide a spark. He is quick, athletic and enthuastic. I know I don't see the kids in practice but who knew how well Mcdonald would play until he was given a chance. Just some frustrated random thoughts.

What about the offense/defense substitution with 3:30 minutes left in the game last night? Did anyone think that was a bit early? Did NCC score the last 3 minutes?

Houliston is a sophomore but played like a veteran tonight. He has a knack for scoring the basketball. They have a nice soph group up There if They can keep them playing the next couple years. I also liked the way Nick True has been playing coming off the bench. Another 10th grader with a lot of upside is Brendan Buten. He came in and provided tenacious defense on Beuter all over the floor when New got in foul trouble.

 

Towles Did a nice job in the paint snagging several offensive boards and taking care of the ball when he was fed.

 

NCC has a lot of length but They really don't play an aggressive style outside of Morse and occasionally Miller.

 

Hightchew and Beuter clinched it with their FT shooting but that's to be expected. Guards should make their FT's at hone.

 

One thing I was quite surprised by was the Birds opening the game in a zone when They have played man 99% of their games this year. I think that really hurt being down 8-0 in the first 2 min. However, Good timeout and switch to man allowed them to string 11 straight points themselves.

 

Good to meet ya Lawnboy take care of that sweet 16 princess and always Good to chat hoops with Walter. I haven't seen the replay yet but looking forward to it at some point here soon.

 

He indeed played a great game, the Breds let him get open quite a few times and he burned them good. Nice chatting with you and Walter. The sweet 16 princess was completely surprised by the halftime birthday wish.

Granted tough loss in the All A for NCC but they did win last night! Give Highlands credit for a great effort and give NCC credit for a hard fought victory against an improving team. This is another rivalry where you can throw out records and who is the better team. Toss the ball in the air and you will get 32 minutes of intensity from both schools. Almost made the trip up on the hill to see this one. Wish I did.

I think we would be silly to think that playing a freshman (Pangallo) would not stir up some issues at this point. I'm also sure it's not like when I played. My parents would have never complained to a coach about playing tiime. I know he forces shots at times but I think his ball handling against the press could be very helpful. What is there to loose at this point. The team is regressing!

I think Bueter should be a 2 this year with Highchew at the 1. Have Pangallo be the back up 1 to Highchew (along with Bueter) this year. At least give him some quality time at the 1 this year. A lot of one Shot and done. They should own the boards everytime out with that size imo. Teams would die to have that and two Good guards like Beuter and Hightchew.

Damian and I talked about the exact same thing last night during the broadcast. Newcath should own the boards with their size and length. Give Miller credit though. At 6'1-6'2 he is probably the Breds best rebounder.

 

I'm also surprised Brannen doesn't play McDonald and Schulte together more in a 3-2 zone with Seibert, Ryan, and Hightchew/Beuter up top.

I thought Miller did a great job on the boards last night. I also liked his aggressiveness on looking for his shot on the offensive end, both shooting the 3's and driving to the basket. I thought McDonald more than held his own with Towles. I thought Towles scored his points when McDonald was out. I thought NCC was two whistles slow in getting McDonald back in when Highlands brought Towles back in.

 

I just think Beuter should be the 2 and Hightchew should be the 1. Again, not a knock on either of them, I just think they should be flipped (Beuter is a nice spot up shooter and Hightchew likes to take the ball to the basket) and Pangallo should get some looks with varsity.

Your last sentence says a lot. They shoot way too many 3's without getting into their offense first. Consistently got beat down the floor by Highlands for easy shots. It appears some times certain players aren't interested in the defensive end of the floor at all. The offensive/defensive substitutions were a little much, especially since they kept McDonald out on defense until the last sequence and then he winds up blocking the last shot.
