Suprisinlgly successful? A lot of people knew how good Connor was going to be everyone back but one

Here is my 2 cents, Ryle is the best team in the 9th, ND and Boone are next two,

however take Moss away from Boone and they drop, Conner and Highlands are next, mix them up and NCC is after that. Any one of those six team could beat one another on a

given night but of course the bottom 3 would need to be at their best to beat Ryle.

I do think Conner will beat Ryle or Boone once this season. Conner has Boone

at home and then they host the district. They are unbeaten at home and tough to beat.

They are a top five team in the region and most experts stated last year they had NO

talent. I think they have proven those so called experts wrong.

 

I know Conner beat both Highlands and NCC, and both were pretty close games, but didn't NCC just recently beat Highlands by like 20. And I believe Conner and NCC play again in a few weeks. I think Conner has a really nice team and hope they make it to the regional tournament, but before they think about winning the region they will need to get out of their district. That will be a very difficult task but will definitely have a nice advantage playing the district at home. Good luck Cougars.

Thanks. Wasn't at the game but heard it was a close game as mentioned in this thread. How much, if any, of this was due to the fact that Conner had to foul late in the game?

Ryle made Free throws down the stretch to seal the win and Conner couldn't knock down some shots at the end. The foul desparity may be due to the fact Ryle took the ball to the rim and Conner settled for jump shots. The refs did a good job in this one.

There has been so much said about this one I had to go watch it on I-High. Here are some numbers and some of my observation.

 

First off, and huge for the first half of this one, led 24-23 by Conner, is that Jenna Crittendon picked up two fouls in the first quarter and basically sat for a quarter and a half. She is clearly the most talented player on the floor and her absence is a big loss for Ryle. She came back with a lot of energy and clearly picked up her team.

 

Here are the foul and free throw numbers, totals first........fouls called against.......Conner 24, Ryle 14. At the half it was Conner 9, Ryle 6. Also of interest is that with 2:04 left in the game it was Conner 17, Ryle 14. Pretty even. Conner fouled 7 times in the last 2:04 in a futile attempt to catch up.

 

Free throws......made and attempted, were........Conner 2 of 6, Ryle 26 of 32. At the half it was Conner 2 of 4 and Ryle 3 of 4. Ryle shot 18 free throws in the final period,14 in that aforementioned final 2:04.

 

All that said, I don't think the totals define much about the quality of the officiating. The disparity comes from Conner fouling so frequently in the last quarter trying to catch up and, has been mentioned, the difference in style of play, Ryle often attacking while Conner settled for a ton of outside shots. I saw one obvious missed call when Crittendon crashed the boards and jumped on a Conner player's back, knocking her to the court with no foul called. But overall I thought the officiating was OK.

Thanks WV Frank. Folks that are less experienced at watching hoops games would not understand the point of your whole thread!!! Fouls and who they are called on and when have a huge influence on a game.

 

I was not at the game, but in my opinion there are usually about 5 calls a game that could go either way or were not called, etc. Like Voice of Reason says in many of his posts, sometimes the whining about officiating on here gets old. It is generally the losing squad doing the crying, and their coaches, players and fans can only see the game through their "eyes".

 

The losing team is generally forced to foul late to force their opponent to the charity stripe, in hopes that they miss and then they start knocking in some three point shots. Counting fouls against teams is about as significant as counting how many black cars are in the Conner parking lot for the Ryle/Conner game.

 

The 33rd is going to be brutal in district play, but Boone has a star in Moss, and Ryle has one in Jenna. I think Conner has a star player too, so it may come down to execution by the role players. One thing I feel pretty sure of is that whatever "stripes" are assigned to the games will not care who wins or loses.

The officiating did not cost Conner this game. I think Jenna played a little more than a 1/2 qt in the first but she sat the entire second. Jenna just hitting the middle in third and hitting those two threes took Conner out of their zone. Ashley also hit two big three's in third. Conner attempted to counter and could not hit the bigs shots. Thats why they were forced to foul. I thought overall the refs took this game very serious and did a good job. To win one of these games Conner will need to make their shots. I have seen them do just that and beat some good teams. I believe Conner's shooters will catch fire and will beat Ryle or Boone this season.
