Having read the link in the first post in this thread, I'd vote for the guy. I don't even care what his positions are. He's cool, and that is enough for me at this point in my life.

He is an Ironman, climbed Everest, and goes to crazy libertarian parties -- he has cool locked down. I do think you'd agree with a lot of his positions though.

Theoretically, I would probably be for it. But I don't think it serves as much of a deterrent. For fear of executing an innocent person, I'd be fine if it was done away with.

Gotcha. Just checking for consistency. I find those who call themselves "pro-life" while supporting the death penalty (which seems to be the overwhelming majority of "pro-lifers") to be very hypocritical, as a life is a life is a life. I think those folks should start being more honest and calling their movement "anti-abortion" instead.

I can see where you might think it's hypocritical but I think it's more being concerned with an innocent life. They just don't agree with you that "a life is a life is a life". I don't know any pro-lifers who don't struggle with the idea of executing an innocent person. Certainly don't think it's your "overwhelming majority" by any means.

The way I understood Jim's comment, he doesn't see being anti-abortion & pro-capital punishment as hypocritical, but that we should refer to ourselves as anti-abortion instead of Pro Life.

Exactly. The "pro-life" movement has chosen to try and redefine what "life" means. It's not for us to choose which life is worth more than others — at least to the degree that the hardcore "pro-lifers" do. As a general rule, "pro-lifers" tend to be conservatives, and those who support capital punishment also fall into the conservative camp.

I take umbrage at those who would choose to redefine the word, as well as those who try to say this life is worth more than that life.

 

For the record, I am against abortion on general principle but am flexible about certain situations (such as if the pregnancy is endangering the mother's life, or in the case of rape). However, it's not a hot-button issue with me, and something I'm really fairly indifferent about.

 

I am also for capital punishment, but I think there should be a moratorium on it until the flaws in the system are cleaned up. But I'm kind of indifferent towards it as well.

 

As far as my indifference goes, it's because history (and current events) has shown us that human life is very cheap in the grand scheme of things. Plus, I think the world is grossly overpopulated, and I'm more concerned about those people who are already here rather than those who might be on the way.
