I wasn't at the game but good to hear that the Dawgs are finding their stroke after not displaying much of it in the early goings of the season. Gonna guess that Newport didn't present much of a defensive obstacle for their outside shooting in the ways they'll see from the likes of this year's top notch 9th Region contenders.

 

Surprisingly, almost all of the threes were contested. Holmes just made some very tough shots, especially Coston. He has such a smooth shot and when he is on, he's tough to stop.

 

I agree though it'll be interesting to see if they can shoot like this against the other top teams.

Holmes shot 65 percent from the field in the first half and poured in 61 points in the first two quarters in a 101-53 win over Newport on Tuesday.

 

Senior forward Dontel Rice scored all 21 of his points in the first half, and junior guard B.J. Coston also finished with 21 points for the Bulldogs.

 

Junior guard Daquan Palmer totaled 11 points and five assists for Holmes, which won its fourth straight game.

If Holmes can hit their 3's like last night, they may become unstoppable in the 9th. I agree, I expected a big Holmes win, but not this big with 12 scorers in the books.

There is a lot that is new this season for the Holmes boys’ basketball team. The Bulldogs are wearing new uniforms and the gym has undergone upgrades with the installation of new lights and new coats of paint. The floor is getting resurfaced during Christmas break and the baselines are getting new wall pads.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the Bulldogs' ability to score points in bunches. Holmes set season highs for points scored in a quarter, a half and a game Tuesday with a 101-53 victory over Newport in Covington. The Bulldogs did it without starting forward Charles Knox, who served a one-game suspension for violating an unspecified team rule.

 

“People are going to look at the score and think we’re terrible, but we’re not,” Newport coach Rod Snapp said. “They shot the ball.”

 

It was the most points for Holmes in at least 13 years.

 

“That's just one of those games where everybody hit their first couple of shots and it gave us confidence, and we just fed off that,” Holmes coach Jason Booher said. “Not having Knox actually made us quicker and we really got up and down.”

 

The Bulldogs (6-1), ranked third in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, scored 30 points in the first quarter against Newport (3-3) then outdid that with 31 in the second for a 61-18 halftime lead. Holmes shot 65.7 percent (23-for-35) from the floor before the break, hit 10 of 19 3-point attempts in the game and surpassed its previous high of 71 points against Somerset.

 

“You shoot like that and you'll win a lot of games,” Booher said. “We attacked the rim and that opened up outside shots, and that's the way we want to play.”

 

Senior forward Dontel Rice outscored the Wildcats in the first half with all 21 of his points. He had 19 in the first nine minutes.

 

“I just had it going in the first half and got a lot of stick-backs,” Rice said. “I knew coming in I was going to have to play harder.”

 

Other catalysts for the Bulldogs were junior guard B.J. Coston, who scored nine of his 21 points in the first quarter, and sophomore guard Daquan Palmer, who scored nine of his 11 in the first half. Coston's eight points fueled a 17-1 first-quarter scoring run for the Bulldogs.

 

“Our previous game, we didn't get up and down the floor like we wanted, but tonight was faster,” Palmer said.

 

Holmes won its fourth straight game.

 

“What I like is we had 18 assists after having eight or 10 a game,” Booher said. “And for as fast as we were playing, we only had 10 turnovers.”

 

JaShawn Short led the Wildcats with 14 points.

I'm not surprised at all by this. Newport hasn't beaten anyone that really matters, and have lost rather handedly to teams that sorta do. Don't get me wrong, the Dawgs show a ton of potential as always, but put a Dixie or NewCath 'D' and 32 minutes of tenacity on them, and I'm seeing an entirely different struggling offensive output. Not saying they can't contend, but if they could learn to play entire games and not just in spurts they'd be better off for it. Teams like I've mentioned do and when playing them you have to too, or you're going home with a big 'L' on your resume. That's just a sobering reality check for Holmes as well as anyone else drunk on the Kool-Aid that provokes the suggestion that they are untouchable.

The Dogs got off to a quick start and made shots.

When they do that, they will be a tough out.

Any of the top 5 teams that shoots lights out is gonna win. Consistency is needed from the Bulldogs. When they are good, they are very, very good, the same as when they are bad. Hopefully, they will be more consistent shooting the ball and they will contend. It will not surprise if they beat anyone, nor will it surprise me if they lose to any of the top 10 teams. They are fun to watch, though.
