1987 CCH over Paducah

Tilghman's starting quarterback didn't play in that game because of a knee injury and started a sophomore that I don't believe had ever started a varsity contest. That and the steady rain did a lot to equalize things.

I'm thinking '87, Shelby over Boone.....

 

Here's our winner as far as I'm concerned.

 

Had played in last regular season game and I believe Boone won the regular season game 34-0

 

I'm pretty sure the regular season meeting was 28-0 in Boone's favor. Splitting hairs I know.

 

It's easy to make an argument this was Boone's best team ever. A lot of things had to go wrong for Boone to lose this game, and they all did.

Trigg County came out of nowhere to upset Harrodsburg in the 1971 playoffs, then had to beat Richmond Madison in the semis. They beat 1A power Lynch at old Stoll Field to win their first state title. I don't think anyone saw that one coming.

 

Bourbon County (a #4 seed I believe) won the 1997 2A title.

 

Bourbon was a #3 seed that year. They beat Owensboro Catholic in the finals.

I still can't believe that they won. They were probably the fifth best team that we played that year. We beat them in the regular season final...then they went on to win it all.

 

We lost to Raceland in the first round that year. That was a huge upset

OK - so then 1988 when none of those conditions existed. Either way, Paducah Tilghman was loaded with talent and athletes.

You can throw in 89 for Paducah too. They should have won 3 straight titles. In 89, they had 8 seniors sign D-1 scholarships, 5 to Louisville.

Tilghman could have easily won three straight from 1987-89, but I wouldn't call any of those games the biggest upset in state finals history.

I agree, definately not close to the biggest. But all 3 would be considered upsets though.

Actually, Boone used converted running backs at quarterback a lot in the late 80's and early 90's, i.e. Mullins, Dinn, and Bramlage.

 

Speaking specifically of the 87 title game, Boone didn't lose it because of their inability or unwillingness to pass. The passing game had nothing to do with this game.

 

And speaking generally, one of the things that riles me up is the persistent notion in NKY that Boone would have won more had they passed more. From what I remember, passing for the sake of passing or trying to "balance" the offense, would have only brought Boone closer to the pack and likely shortened several of their runs through the playoffs.
