Dixie has won consistently over the last six years. Scott Draud had a great record, although I still think he underacheived with the talent he had, and Coach Chevalier has just started his second season, and he is 28-9, but it is still to early in his career to accurately judge him.

 

Scott Draud set basketball back at Dixie. Who wants to play that style of ball? I like how people credited him with being a great defensive coach when, in reality, what he did was have is offense hold the ball, thus, the opponent didn't score many points.

 

Probably a good guy. Nothing bad to say about him as a person. Has done well for himself. Could be making more money outside of education so hats off to him for that.

 

Sucked as a coach though.

What about the Covington Holmes coach , they won the Region last year. He would have to be among the top five.

I think Coach Draud started playing stall ball out of ego. After the 2001 loss to Holy Cross at Holy Cross my senior year. Dixie was #1 and without a doubt more talented than us. Danny Trame had us literaly hold the ball at half court until Dixie would come and guards us, when we took a few mintues off the clock we would then run a play for Josh Beiting and he would score. Josh was the best player on the floor.

 

We won the game 29-26, and I really think it changed the face and style of the Dixie Program.

I'm old school....Mike Listerman (and sidekick "Buster" Petty) of CCH are master motivators and demanding defensive stalwarts. plus, you have to go quite a ways to find two finer people as coaches!

 

Elmer Faust of St. Henry was a great player and is just as fine of a coach.

 

Willie Schlarman is resurrecting a recently downtrodden hoops program at HHS.

(much like his brother is doing with Newport FB!)

:sleep: Sorry I missed that snooze fest. Great players don't always make great coaches as has been proven with a great many former players but Draud really didn't coach long enough for anyone to honestly know what kind of coach he would have been over the long haul. I sort of think he ought to return to coaching to see how he does as opposed to pursuing other options that IMO he is not yet ready for.

Say what you will but that Dixie team was loaded and outside of Beiting HC was down. Trame had to do what he had to do to win. I think the way we beat them frustrated Draud and forever changed his mindset. HE never wanted to get beat that way again. So he learned to play that style.

The 9th region has a few good coaches, a few ineffective coaches and it quite a few that are too new to be placed in either category.

 

I would list as the best 9th region coaches;

 

Mike Listerman - Always has his team prepared, motivated and playing hard. Not afraid to lose early in the year by playing very good competition. The way his team plays is different from year to year depending on the strengths of his players. Some years they will run and gun and other years they play a slow, half court set. They always play good defense.

 

Dave Faust - Tremedous knowledge of the game and the ability to relate it to his players and get the most from them.

 

Willie Schlarman - Also has very good knowledge of the game and will have Highlands near the top for years to come. There is no denying what he did for Brossart before he left.

 

Dave Henley - Has done a very good job at Holmes. Even before this group of juniors arrived, coach Henley elevated the program from where it had been. This may be the toughest job in the region because of various reasons and he has done a tremendous job.

 

I also think that given more experience Jim Hicks and Erik Goetz could join this list. They are both good coaches but I couldn't include them in this list quite yet.

What about Newport's Eric Russell? Did'nt he play Basketball? Has'nt he proved his self as one of the best in the 9th Region??

There was a Russell that coached at Highlands in the mid 70's. Is this guy any relation? He was a small college all-american...and not a very good coach, but a great guy! Thank goodness for Kenny Shields!
