Isn't the half court line in this case similar to the goal line in football? If so, have all 3 points (both feet and the ball) crossed the "plane" of the HC line?

Yes. That makes the half court line akin to an out of bounds line and by catching the ball in the air after being in the frontcourt and landing in the backcourt he is in violation.

You are correct that it's not a violation. If the pass were to come from a player inbounds it would be. The throw-in rule allows for this.

 

UNLESS the ball is tipped by a defender. If so, the play I described would be a backcourt violation.

The official has to determine if the defender has Legal Guarding Position . Did the defender get there before the shooter started his shot? Were his hands truly straight up? Often fans/players/coaches THINK the hands were straight up but they were not. Was the contact to the torso of the defender or was it to his side? It matters. Was the defender moving forward at the time of contact? Note: If he has LGP he can be moving backwards and still have the foul be on the offense.
