Resting starters debate

Featured Replies

The Moeller/Trinity thread got me wondering what does your school do with respect to resting players?

Play them the whole game, half a game, 1 series????

I think that it is apples and oranges in KY and Ohio. In KY, your top teams generally blow out the #4s. In Ohio, you don't have that luxury, so it would make more sense to rest your do what you needed to to have as healthy a squad as you can going into the playoffs.

I agree with mex. I think Moeller has little play for in this game, although maybe a win would help their seeding, so that would be incentive. Trinity is playing for national recognition so they will come out guns a blazin' and all men in action. Plus Trinity has little to worry about in the first few rounds of the playoffs. Their guys are going to get plenty of rest in rounds 1 and 2.

My intent was not to turn this in to questioning Moeller's intent. I understand why they would rest guys. We have a lot of teams in Kentucky playing some meaningless games this Friday and wanted to know what your school's policy is on playing those kids.

Play hard early, prepare as normal, get a lead, rest key guys.

Agreed.

Starters will play until we hit a running clock. 2nd string will go in for about a quarter and then if possible start subbing in everyone else.

Not a good idea to have your starters sit out an entire game unless someone's injured. They need to stay game-ready.

Could not agree more.

I keep seeing this resting starters talk in various game threads and I have to say, I don't recall this even being a topic of discussion in the past. I can't remember any time that high school teams in previous years rested starters by not playing them in a game. Does anyone else ever remember this being a topic or actually happening? I can understand an injured player not playing in an end season meaningless game but that is different than resting players. I will be very surprised to see any team not playing their starters and resting healthy players in a game this week, including Moeller.
