Final Score from the Hoopin- It-Up Tourney.

WOW! I didnt expect it to be this close.....

I figured it would be a BIG win. Congrats Cards, good luck the rest of the tourney. Keep in mind they have won 16 straight in-state games. Last Ky loss was Feb. 18 against Lex. Cath. This season they lost to Tennessee powerhouse Brentwood Academy by 20.

This SL team could go down as one of the most dominate teams in ky hs basketball history if they manage to repeat......who can stay close to them they they are winning over the top 3-5 regional opponients by 40-50 pts...Unbelivable on how good or should I saw great this team is and they are only gettig better!!! WOW!

Trey Smith and Jordan Hammonds had 19 of 23 points during the 23-3 second quarter run by South that put the game away. Smith had a game-high 22, Hammonds had 18 and Walt Allen had a quiet 19 and 9.

I agree, but the 13th region isn't exactly what you would call the state's best. I would like to see how they match up with Scott Co. or J-Town. Scott Co. is the best team that I have seen so far this year in KY. I would love to see a Pendleton Co./SL matchup this week in the Hoopin' It Up.

Barring a MAJOR upset, you will get that matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday at SLHS in the semifinals. I have a feeling that will be a great game; one that goes a long way toward shaping people's polls for the rest of the season.

With the exception of SouthLaurel, the 13th is very weak region. South will walk through the region with eyes closed.

On the game... SL came out too loose and did not shoot the ball extremely well early. They really let Cawood stay in the game early but picked it up in the second half and added a solid regional win to their record. SL had their bench in the last few minutes of the 2nd half and close to the entire 4th quarter. This was not SL's best game by far and if they come out early and play this way against a good team they could find themselves in a much tougher ball game.

 

On a better note... the SL defense looked extremely well and they continue to amaze me at how deep they go into their bench and dont slack off at all. Not only this, but they are able to maintain a very good pace throughout the span of the entire game and wear teams down. I think SL played one of the quickest guards in the region in number 11 from Cawood and they did a great job on him. SL's press looked really good and stayed in Cawood's face all night. If SL can play defense this good all year long they will be tough come tourney time.

South appears to be playing a style of defense similar to a Billy Hicks' coached team and even though they have pretty good depth, I'm not sure if there is much offensive firepower that comes off the bench. I could see them losing(maybe even inside the region)a game where their traps were not as effective due to the manner in which the game is being called, a good zone defense employed against them and a poor shooting night from the perimeter from South. These factors may never come together all in one night, but if they do, someone in the region could step up and beat them.

Jim - I guess you may have not been around long enough to know that ANYTHING can happen AT Clay County. I agree that SL is the favorite, but a loss in the 13th region tournament would not shock me at all.

 

Over the past several seasons I've seen several SL teams that were "heads and shoulders" above the rest lose in the district or regional tournaments, and that was back in the 12th region days. SL is the favorite, but anything can happen.

As long as Hicks was coach, Corbin was never favored over Clay no matter the rankings or where the game was played. He will tell you that. Keith had his number!! :ylsuper:
