The Beechwood freshman got to see GCL football in full display. The Moeller Crusaders freshman team showed up in force and it was fun to see, despite the final score. I was told they were down a little in numbers as they only had 63 players on the roster. Usually Moeller's freshman roster is 90 strong. In some ways the score could have been closer and in some ways it could have been worse.

Beechwood started out like they might actually be able to hang with the Crusaders. They stopped Moeller's first drive, forcing a punt. Then Beechwood marched down field to the 10 yard line but they were stopped on downs. The yards were hard earned for Moeller and it looked like Beechwood was going to force another punt. Then on 3rd down Moeller's RB found a seam off tackle and made a nice run of about 50 yards for the TD. The first quarter ended with Moeller leading 7-0.

The second quarter, Moeller's depth, size and number of quality athletes began to take charge of the game. Beechwood was having trouble getting first downs. Moeller was having trouble running the ball but they started putting it in the air more and their QB Crable (Bob Crable's son) made some nice throws. First it was a 4th down pass of about 30 yards for a TD. Then Crable connected on the next drive just before the half on another TD pass, a beautiful and impressive slant pattern that a varsity QB would have been proud of. The score was now 21-0 with just under 2 minutes to go in the half. Following the kickoff, Beechwood completed a pass and fumbled the ball away to Moeller at their own 15 yard line. Moeller took that in for another score and it was 27-0 at halftime.

Second half, Beechwood received the kickoff, started their opening 2nd half drive at the 20 and promptly fumbled the ball again. Moeller took advantage of the turnover and scored on another TD pass and the game was over for all intents and purposes. Moeller started mixing in backups with starters and then eventually all second teamers as the game wore on. Final score 42-14.

IMO it really wasn't a bad showing for the Tigers. They had some moments and hung in there. It easily could have been a 14-7 or 21-7 game at halftime. But 3 or 4 turnovers against a team like Moeller and you have no chance. All the fumbles were guys just losing the ball in the open field with no contact. Strange.

Considering Moeller's only loss was to St. Xavier's 123 member freshman team, the Tigers have nothing to hang their heads about on this one.

Great write up VOR.

Thanks. I had to type all that up to get the blood flowing back in my hands. Man was it cold out there tonight. I am not ready for this weather yet.

Agreed, great summary of the game VOR, thank you!

Hats off to Beechwood for even trying to play such a big GCL school!

Thanks, TOG. It doesn't match up to the great detailed summaries you post :notworthy: but it lets everyone know how things played out.

Fantastic VOR. Have you been getting pointers from tog?

Just trying to learn from observation of the master. I need to get some tips on taking notes so I can do the famous "box score" listing of score and times TOG always puts together. Maybe I can do an apprenticeship?

Don't know...I do know they have 4 or 5 eighth graders that start though...

I would guess around 25 players on Beechwood's team. And perhaps about half of them are 8th graders and as raiderbird stated, 4 or 5 starters are 8th graders. When you throw all that in there, Beechwood fans should feel even better about the showing versus Moeller.
