I was there, semifinals, 1979. Dick Roddy was the head coach then, Coach Haywood didn't come to Belfry until 1984.

I really think he needs a nice RED sport jacket though, instead of just the navy one.

 

I agree. That would be sweet. Based on what I read, he wouldn't do it though because it would attract attention to himself. Coach Holcomb is more like Belichick, he likes the casual wear, sweatshirts and such. :lol:

So you do remember the old tearaway jersey days. David Cecil Memorial stadium playing surface was littered with Red globs of cloth the last time these two teams played at Highlands. LOL

I am not sure it was the last time Belfry played at Highlands. I remember an 89 OT playoff game where Belfry ran it down the birds throat. Birds were fortunate to get out of that one. Congrats to Haywood, well deserved and a class coach.

For the record Belfry coaches have been responsible 2 of 3 of the most controversial rule changes in KY High School history.

The "tearaway" jerseys ended after the '79 season and I do believe after the '89 season when Highlands wouldnt take the field until Belfry the visiting team took it first. Must of been an ego thingy. LOL

 

Oh the other rule change was no more "Turkey Bowls" in Pine Mountain. Now theres some great company. :lol:

 

Not that there is anything wrong with any of those changes because they were legal at the time and those coaches exploited it. Were they controversial and did they draw alot of attention. Well according to this thread thats not this coaches style.

For the record, both the rule changes you mention involving Belfry/Highlands came from the '79 semifinal game. Belfry used tearaway jerseys and refused to take the field until HHS took it first. Coach Roddy was the coach at the time but it doesn't involve Coach Haywood. Good stuff for another thread, though.
