I don't feel someone who dislikes African-Americans is going to one day just stop disliking them. They may not behave in discriminatory ways towards them, but the feelings still exist. JMO.

Why do you think one cannot decide that they have truly changed their mind on this matter, but that they can with something else.

 

When I was young, I HATED eating fish. I had is in my head that I hated fish so much that even the smell of fish cooking in my mom's kitchen would gag me. Now, it's one of my favorite things to cook and eat. Did I honestly hate the taste of fish as a youngster? Yes. Did I have any basis for hating the taste of fish beyond...well...my taste? No. Has that opinion completely changed in the course of my life? Yes.

 

I don't see too much difference in the two. Both opinions are largely based on immaturity, ignorance, unawareness, lack of knowledge.

To me, there's a disconnect between forming an opinion based on recent or even present actions vs. forming an opinion based on actions from 40+ years ago.
