I'm just not seeing Jerry Rice as the greatest player ever. I would take Brown, Sayers, Payton, Moss, Montana, Marino, Favre and Brady before Rice and that is just off the top of my head.

I don't think Deion was overrated, unless you're calling him the best player of all-time. Regardless of whether he tackled or not, he could lock down whoever you wanted to put him on and take that player out of the game, essentially locking up half the field for your defense. There have been very few guys of that caliber since I've been watching the NFL...in fact, Deion and Revis are the only two that come to mind at the moment. What kind of value do you place on that kind of ability?

 

I understand the complaint about him not tackling, thus hurting his status as an "all-around" corner. But, a corner's primary responsibility is to cover. Anything else is a distant second place. He was undoubtedly the best in the league at covering when he played.

 

I just cannot say someone is the best at something on the field if they do not do all aspects of the position. Tackling is a huge part of playing QB, although not as important as covering. He's not even an average tackler, I can't say he's by far the best CB. I just can't do it.

If you threw to Jerry Rice he caught it. He may not have been the best blocker, but he did block. If you ran at Deion Sanders, he got out of the way.

I can't vote Prime Time #1. He was a defensive player that refused to tackle. Great playmaker in coverage & when the ball was in the air though. He's the most overrated CB in NFL history IMO, but I understand that I'm in the minority.

Deion was the best corner ever- how was he overrated? Teams literally did not throw to his half of the field. Did he like tackling, no. Did he tackle people- yes. I can not remember a single time a team ran at Deion and he "got out of the way". In an era when teams ran more sweeps, you did not see teams trying to attack Deion that way. I think his lack of tackling was always overstated. He did not patrol the field like Ronnie Lott or Night Train Lane, but none of those guys shut down half of the field like Deion, while returning punts and kicks and being a legit weapon as a receiver on offense. JMO.

I can't do a list like yours. I would take Brady, Montana and probably Favre before Elway.

 

I'd take Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Marshall Faulk and could be talked into LT before Emmitt.

I do not know of a player in the modern era that was able to impact to impact all 3 phases except for Deion, so I went with him as the greatest.

Night Train Lane, Ronnie Lott when he played corner, Eric Allen, Aeneas Williams may be the most underrated, Revis, Champ Bailey, Darrell Green (probably my number 2) to name a few all timers, IMO.

I love Prime Time, my fave all time player. If I had to go with best all time...I'm going LT. He couldn't be blocked. A maniac on the field.

Jim Brown. Also the greatest lacrosse player ever.

 

Brown also played basketball and averaged 15 ppg his sophomore season and ran track one season. In all he earned 13 letters while at Syracuse. I play golf in the winter with a guy that played lacrosse with Jim Brown and he said that Jim Brown was the best athlete he has ever seen. He said he could have been All-American in basketball, football, lacrosse and track if he wanted to.

Charles Woodson is the most complete corner of all-time IMO. Sure he's a realitively new guy, but today football is played in space and in one-on-ones. Great cover guy, good tackler, the complete package.

 

I do think that for a brief period of time Champ Bailey played the position as well as anyone could. Revis could get there, but he doesn't break on the ball like other guys do. However I've heard it said that this is because he focuses on such tight coverage. Guys that played in the stone age are a tough comparison, the game was so different then.
