Flotsam Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 The Dominican Republic Basketball team stunned FIBA Americas Tournament -Group A favorite Brazil Friday night 79-74. The D.R. basketball team has never in its history qualifed for the Olympics. A description of the next round of the tournament, an eight team pool format which begins Monday, (only slightly less confusing than the Uniform Commercial Code) can be found on Coach Cal's website. http://www.coachcal.com/2011/09/02/coach-cal-led-dominicans-shock-brazil-pave-path-for-possible-historic-run/ Love him or hate him, the man can coach.
Wireman Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 The Dominican Republic won Group A - the first time in DR history that they clinched the top seed in their group.
Wireman Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 They play Panama, Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Argentina in order starting Monday...top 4 teams after that round advance to semifinals.
Flotsam Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 The beat rolls on. The Domincan Republic beat Panama today, 92-68.
rockmom Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I saw they lost Sosa today to an absolutely nauseating fracture. I hope he's able to recover and play again. I like Sosa.
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 That video of Sosa's fracture is hard to watch. Thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery.
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 The D. R. looks like a different team today. They are getting handled by Uruguay. Coach Cal is losing it on the sidelines. Sosa's injury must have really gotten in their heads.
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Big run in the 2nd quarter for the D.R.
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Live stream: http://hoopsterplanet.blogspot.com/2011/08/fiba-americas-2011-live-stream-matches.html There have been some great shots of the Dominican Republic fans going crazy during the comeback...many of whom are in Kentucky shirts.
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Uruguay scores with 1.3 seconds left in the 2nd quarter to go up 1. Cal calls timeout. Draws up the play. FIBA camera zooms in on Cal as he draws up the play with the inbounds pass coming to the left side around 1/2 court. Huddle breaks. In bounds pass to the left side around 1/2 court, 45 footer at the buzzer. Bang biscuit. D.R. up 2 at the half. (and he didn't even have Laettner to throw it to)
Flotsam Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 The Dominican Republic rolls on 84-76 over Uruguay. [rumors of their demise (primarily by me) were greatly exaggerated.] This was a close game throughout. Excellent work by Cal.

[rumors of their demise (primarily by me) were greatly exaggerated.] This was a close game throughout. Excellent work by Cal. Good to see them get the win without Sosa. The PG is the most important component in Cal's offense so it has to be a good thing for them to pull one out without their starting point man. Hoping the guys can keep it rolling and earn their first ever trip to the Olympic games.
Wireman Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Hey, just wanted to note that the Dominican Republic secured a spot in the semifinals with today's win. They'll hope to win at least one more so they can avoid Argentina in the semifinal round. The goal would be to play either Puerto Rico or Brazil in the semis as Argentina is simply on another level at the moment.
HT721 Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 If someone knows if they will play Puerto Rico and has a link please post it on here, one of my friends is on the Puerto Rico national team and I"d love to watch him play.

Do they have to win the tournament to secure a spot in the Olympics or can they do so by just making the championship game?
