Belfry 34 Henry Clay 21

Featured Replies

Pirates rush for over 400 yards and almost 500 total yards.

Score doesn't indicate just how dominant Belfry looked. 3A take notice.

The Big Red Machine looked great on the video feed!

Belfry 491 Total Yards (426 rushing, 65 passing)

Henry Clay 240 Total Yards with probably 75% of that coming on the 3 TD runs by Jackson

Belfry held the ball probably 75-80% of the game.

Very respectable performance by Belfry in this one. The Pirates did what they do. They put together long drives, moved the chains and used up clock. Most importantly, they finished most of those drives with points. Henry Clay broke 3 or 4 long runs from scrimmage which resulted in most of their yards and all the points. The Blue Devils looked really tired on defense in the 2nd half, but as was already mentioned, they had been on the field for 3/4 of the game. I would guess Belfry had the ball for 35 minutes of the 48.

Davion Jackson is a heck of a back for Henry Clay. He had touchdown runs of 56, 44 and 67 yards. Henry Clay only had 240 total yards on the night and Jackson had 167 on 3 plays. The rest of the offense had around 75 yards the rest of the game. Belfry had 28 first downs to 9 for HC.

After Belfry took the 34-21 lead, Henry Clay got the ball back with about 6 minutes to go. On that drive they ran the ball about 6-7 times and threw it only once while the clock continued to run. On 4th and the length of the ball, the brought in their "fridge" back and instead of running straight ahead, he ran down the line where Belfry's DE Tony Messer made a very nice stop short of the first down. I didn't understand why they didn't have more urgency needing 2 scores and why they didn't just QB sneak needing only inches for the first down.

Anyway, Belfry took over on downs with a little under 4 min to go I think and ran it down the throats of Henry Clay down to about the 10 yard line. With just over a minute to go, the Pirates took a knee two plays in a row instead of trying to score.

Congrats to 2c and his Belfry team....impressive win!!

Philip Haywood says his success as coach of the Belfry Pirates is because of his players, and it's not about him.

But it's difficult to ignore the numbers. Haywood pulled to within six of tying the most career wins by a Kentucky high school football coach with Friday's 34-21 win at Henry Clay.

Haywood's 338th career victory came with all the flash of a steamroller.

Belfry (2-0) gained 426 of its 491 yards on the ground, piling up 28 first downs to Henry Clay's nine, and holding the ball for all but 13:20.

"It's never mentioned with me around or our kids," Haywood said of his impending record. "It's not about me. If it happens, it happens, but we'll just go on about our business."

Thats a great article in the Herald Leader, coach Simpson had nice things to say. Belfry really dominated the game save for the 3 big runs by Jackson. The stats surprised me and I was at the game. LOL

Henry Clay surprised me in that it seemed their kids lost heart and were going through the motions in the 2nd half, and they were in the game, they just didn't seem to have any intensity at all.

The 90 yard, 8:00 drive that put Belfry up 28-21 was the nail in the coffin. You could just see that HC's defense was dead on it's feet and Belfry was not going to be stopped.

I love the fact Belfry has seemingly evolved beyond being an Iron Man football team. The amount of talent in the Soph and Jr classes is scary and it has allowed Belfry to rotate more players and limit the guys who are a necessity on both sides of the ball.
