Nope. She said she was proud of America for the first time in her adult life. I simply asked what is so bad about that and then I stated that her statement doesn't even come close to comparing to 'gays are barbarians'.

Oh come on-I guess no opportunities right. Check out how much of their higher education either of the Obama's paid for. Her brother Craig (not a woman) is a highly paid head basketball coach of a college. Has our past been perfect-no, but you can darn be sure the minorities in this country (gender, religious or ethnic) are given a chance to succeed unlike the grand majority of the world.

 

I am trying to say this as delicately as I can...why aren't African Americans here mad about their African ancestors that sold them into slavery?? Many were slaves in Africa and then became slaves in other countries. Their life value apparently had a price that was paid and acceptable to the seller.

 

 

For the record, I am not African-American....I am black. I was born in Houston, Texas not Ghana. I despise the use of the word African-American to describe me. I am an American who happens to be black. I was born here and didn't have to pass a test to have a hyphenate my American citizenship.

 

Also, I honestly could care less about Africans. Just like I could care less about Europeans and Asians and everyone else not from America. Greed knows no color and that is why Africans sold themselves into slavery. Any black person that doesn't acknowledge that is misinformed and likely close minded on the situation. Seeing as how there are only about 5 of us in all on here I feel pretty safe in saying that we know all about slavery and how it started. I don't recall seeing any of us absolving our African descendants of their past mistakes.

 

As for Michelle and her statement.....regardless of the great opportunities she and her brother received the pain and the sting of racism is something I am sure her parents suffered through and as a result it may have fueled her and her brother's desires to succeed in America. Just because she created a good life for herself doesn't absolve her country of any wrongs she or her family may have endured as a result of the climate and environments that she grew up in and is around. I love my country, my family and my workplace very much. Doesn't mean I am proud of everything they do.

I don't. The same people who voted for Obama couldn't care less about her comment and likely understand where she was coming from. Same goes for Bachmann's husband. Their supporters likely believe this as well so no damage will be done.

True. And in the middle there will be some who agree with him and others who don't. I don't think his comment will sway them on a decision on whether they will vote for her or not.

 

If that comment does indeed way their decision then they are just as flaky as Bachmann, IMO.

The last election dove more deeply into a candidate's personal acquaintances/associations. Is this a one-time scenario or with today's plethora of info and easy access to the past is it permanent? Is it fair? Does it give us good insight?

Most folks will pick and choose as to whether or not "good insight" is gained, depending upon factors like party association and liberal/moderate/conservative orientation.

I think Bachmann's statement is much more ignorant but there are many, perhaps millions of people who would consider Obama's statement to be more ignorant and insulting coming from a candidate's spouse.

Gotcha. I took it as you comparing the two. Michelle Obama's statement never struck me as ignorant and I am kind of surprised that millions would think it to be ignorant and even more ignorant than Bachmann's comment. I'd love to know why they feel that way.
