A little closer. My only complaint is that it only has 3 USB ports.

I'm a Toshiba man, myself. I've never had any other brand give me the performance and reliability. I have 10 in service at work and have never replaced any of them due to anything other than abuse. Can't say that for the Dells and HPs I've replace with them. My Satellite with a Pentium 133 in it, just died a couple of months ago.

I don't know the model # right off the top of my head, but my primary work machine is a Toshiba Satellite with an i7 on board. I paid $900 for it, about a year ago, and had the RAM bumped up to 8 gig, and upgraded to Win 7 Pro. It has exceeded my expectations. I don't do gaming, but I run multiple virtual machines (Server 2003, Win 7, and XP), usually Outlook and Excel, and 5 or six terminal server sessions on it all at the same time, and you could not tell, if you didn't know it.

I'm on my Macbook right now, but I wouldn't recommend it for all you want to do, especially the gaming.

I've had my Toshiba for three years now and love it. The only problem I have is that the battery is COMPLETELY shot on it.
 Actually I'm using an HP with AMD right now (my mom's) to look for new laptops. It is getting pretty hot. But my laptop is a Gateway with the i3 processor. It's gotten to the point where it won't run for more than a few minutes before overheating and shutting down. I'm strongly considering the Toshiba I posted earlier because of your recommendation. You seem to know quite a bit more about these things than I do.
You ever cleaned your laptop?
Sounds like you have a HP with an AMD processor. I've had a lot of problems with HPs of that sort overheating. AMDs generally run hotter than Intel processors.

Mine is Satellite A505 and I'm using primarily as a desktop. It's connected to a docking station and 2 external monitors, and it runs 24/7. I've had it over a year and have had no problems of any kind and it still runs circles around my Macbook.

Nice coffee mug. :D

Yes, I've done everything I could to keep it running properly. It took some digging around online, but I found that the problem is prevalent in my specific laptop. It appears to be a design flaw. That's why I'm trying to be more thorough this time around in researching before I purchase.

My first laptop was a state of the art HP that cost me about $1,500 back when I was a freshman in college. Lasted me 4 years before it was crap. Went out and bought a Toshiba for about $650-$700 and it's worked like a charm for 3 years now. Starting to show it's age a bit, but nothing too bad yet. I agree the battery is awful. I can't turn mine on without it being plugged in anymore.

When my HP crapped out, I had an IT repair guy look at it and he said 2-3 years is about all you can expect from a laptop any more with the advances and upgrades before they become outdated.

My battery is the same way. I'm starting to think maybe I need to buy a new one but I've always heard they are fairly expensive.

It alternates with a green one that has an embossed iconic U on the side. u.gif:D

The one in this A505 is pretty efficient. I can last 3 or more hours in eco mode.

If my plug falls out for one second mine goes off...

Depends on the model of laptop. I've seen it range from $18 to $118. In either case, it's still cheaper than a new machine.

I am also shopping for a laptop. I'm mostly doing very simple stuff on it--nothing in terms of gaming, video/music editing, or things like that. My wife will do a lot of pictures/photos, but for the most part, just simple things. Some questions I have are:

* Processor. How important is it? I keep seeing I3, I5, etc. Is the AMD processor crap?

* Memory. How much am I looking for?

* Brands. I see some Toshiba people here. We can't afford Mac. I personally prefer Dell. What does everyone else think?

* Hard Drive. Is 350 enough? Or should I get something at least 500?

Thanks for any responses. Any other suggestions that I haven't covered are appreciated also.

I went to Best Buy and I think I found what I am looking for. I'll let you all tell me what you know about the brand before I purchase.

Asus G73SW - BST6

Core i7 Sandy Bridge Processor

8 GB DDR3 RAM

17.3" Screen

NVIDIA GTX460M Graphics Card with 1 GB dedicated memory

750 GB HDD

I've got the macbook air and I love it. The air probably isn't good for games though, they don't have cd-roms so you are kind of up a creek if you buy a game and have to install it via cd.
