A lot of people will say CovCath didn't hit the ball that well today, however a lot of the balls they hit today would have been hits against most teams. Newports outfield, especially their center fielder covers more ground than anyone in the region. So the balls that were outs today, would usually be doubles and triples against most teams. So if they hit like they did today, they will be fine. It should be a fun game to watch.

Your right they were shut out, and that is why they didn't win. They had guys in scoring position in 4 of the 7 innings, they just couldn't come up with the hit to get them in. That is why I didn't predict that they would win, but I knew they were very capable of it and that is why I said they could surprise people. I know for a fact CovCath was surprise, and didn't expect the game to be this close. Especially being 0 to 0 still going to the bottom of the 5th.

 

You are right it is one of the weaker districts, however like it or not in all sports there is going to be a weak division. And there are going to be teams who come out of those weak divisions, that is just how it goes IN ALL SPORTS. There is no reason to question a team as much as you did, and continually put them down and basically say they have no right to be there, and say for the most part they have no chance to win like you did. We are talking about high school kids here, and there is no need to do that. ESPECIALLY when you don't know much about the team at all, if you did you would have seen what I saw to make me say that they very well could surprise people in the region like they did today. In the end of the day the better team is the one who advanced, so there is no need to make such a big deal out of who makes it like you had. The teams who are left earned their way to the final four in the region, even though EVERY TEAM had a chance to get to this spot because everyone played in the districts and had a chance to keep their seasons going.

 

That is commonplace occurrence on BGP. You only cross the line when you start questioning and naming specific kids, which I have never, ever done. The competitiveness of the 36th in baseball is an issue and worthy of discussion (not in this thread). Again, I have no problem whatsoever with a district having occasional "off" years when they just aren't that strong. It's an entirely different animal when a district is weak year after year after year. And the 36th is. You really can't debate it. Go look up the records. When is the last time Dayton or Newport had a winning season? (further back than contained on KHSAA website). How many winning seasons in the past ten years for Bellevue (2) or HHS (3)?

 

OK, so that's really my last word on it. Newport did themselves proud today and pushed CCH to the limit. Good for them and good for the tournament.

Hats off to Newport. They played a great game and made the plays up until 6th inning. Their pitcher ran out of gas. Newport's center fielder made ESPN highlights today. Proud of the Colonels. games get tougher and we need a crash course in base running.

There is no question that Brad is the best defensive CF in the region. I don't believe he had an error all year from what I've been told and all the games I was at never saw him commit one. Great job on the season, Brad! Gonna miss your glove out there next year!

No doubt those other guys you mentioned are very good center fielders. However Rodney Orr from Newport, probably didn't get to be seen as much around the region this year as others. However the teams that did play against Newport probably would say the samething, and definitely CovCath would agree that he probably is the best. He is very quick, gets great jumps on the ball, covers all kinds of ground as we seen yesterday, and to top it all off he has a cannon from Centerfield. For the people who were at the game yesterday, they know exactly what I am talking about.

Clyde, sounds like you are the one that is the closest to being right. I've seen all of these guys and Justin Carzoli from Boone is as good or better defensively than all of them.

Started the year at 2B, but subsequently got moved back into CF when Ryle had of OF'ing issues.

 

You figure if a team is going to have at least one solid OF'er, he's going to be in CF, right?

No disrespect to Leeke but Rodney Orr arm ovetakes even Leeke IMO. Orr's arm changes the game when taking extra bases and or tagging up.
