Big inning pushes CovCath past Beechwood

COVINGTON, Ky. - Covington Catholic head coach Bill Krumpelbeck said his team has had trouble scoring runs this year.

 

That was hardly the case Friday, as the Colonels used a seven-run fourth inning to beat Beechwood, 10-3, in the 35th District championship game at Meinken Field in Covington.

 

“We haven’t scored many runs at all this year,” Krumpelbeck said. “We’re a low-scoring team. We kind of bunt, get one at a time and draw a lot of walks. That (fourth inning) kind of gave us a break there.”

 

CovCath held true to Krumpelbeck’s words in the first three innings, scoring an unearned run in the second inning and taking a 2-1 lead on sophomore designated hitter Blake Bir’s second home run of the season in the third.

 

The fourth was a different matter, however, as the first nine Colonels to bat all reached base, with the Tigers failing to record an out until turning to their third pitcher of the inning.

 

The inning started as a typical one for the Colonels, with a single, a hit batter, and a bunt single loading the bases. Junior center fielder Brady Reese brought home the first run with a single to left, and a walk to junior Michael Best spelled the end of senior Colin Johnson’s day on the mound for Beechwood.

Old guy come on!!! Stein got on in the 4th with an E1th. Pitcher fielded ball clean and pulled 1st baseman off bag. If you're going to give hits on that stuff, I'll start calling you the left-wing 'keeper.

 

Stein's bunt in the 4th was a clean hit. As mentioned before the pitcher was slow to the ball. Stein beat it for sure.

 

His bunt in the 5th was not a hit. Third baseman was in and fielded it cleanly. The throw beats Stein easily but it's pulled low to the inside and 1B can't make the dig.

I will respectfully disagree with the single ruling. A good throw was going to be an out IMO.

 

Regardless, the #9 hole reached base every time including Jack Grosser with a PH single.

 

I also agree Clyde. I know the ruling in the BW and home team book was an E-5. I believe a good throw would of had him. It would of been close though.

I was impressed with the strength of Brilz' arm at 3b .

So this thread shows how one cannot rely on stats . We have 3 people who have watched a lot of baseball and kept lots of books yet for one batter we had him with 1, 2, and 3 hits. Add in a high school kid on the bench and you see it's subjective.

From what I have seen in high school scoring, if there is any doubt at all the player gets credited with a hit. And I am ok with that.

 

Congrats to the Colonels on getting back on track at the right time. Their pitching depth showed up and the hitters got it going again when they needed it most.

Hard ground ball that ay worst would have resulted in a force out at 2nd or 3rd instead turned into a single that kept the bases loaded. Next batter walked to force in a run.

CovCath hasn't scored a ton of runs this season so if you kill a run at the plate it's a knife in the heart and lifts your kids. Good move if it works.....but

Corners in and middle of infield at DP depth would have been my call.

As with all baseball decisions, many factors come into play. Maybe Coach M saw who was at the plate and thought infield in would put pressure the hitter. With the way this Beechwood team hits, in general I don't think I would have pulled the infield in. With it being CCH, corners in is probably the best way to play it. I would expect my team to score a few runs and try to stop the big inning versus trying to get out of it with no runs scoring.
