Jose Lopez Designated for Assignment, Should the Reds be interested?

Featured Replies

Jose Lopez Designated for assignment by the Rockies...The 27 year old can play 2nd, 3rd, Short and 1st...He was signed to a 1 year deal worth 3.5 Mill by Rockies in the offseason...2006 All Star...In 06' His line was .282 10hr 79rbis, 07' .252 11hr 62rbis, 08' .297 17hr 89rbis, 09' .272 25hrs 96rbis...Those are some nice numbers especially considering he played his Home games at Safeco...Should the Reds consider picking him up?

I wouldn't be against it...He'd be a better option than Janish or Renteria at this point. DFA Gomes and bring him in.

I would be on board with that but I don't think they are going to add that kind of payroll for a guy who might pan out and has 2 people already at his main position.

It'd be prorated right? If that's the case it's about 2.3M.

Yes, even so I just don't see them adding him for that. They could add Frazier for a fraction of that and probably get close to the same production. If he clears waivers and declines the assignment then they might be in the running for him.

But if they DFA'd Gomes, they'd save a good chunk of that. I can't see Gomes getting claimed by anyone, and I don't think he'd accept the reassignment.

Along these same lines, should the Reds pick up the phone and give the Giants a call? See what they could get for Hernandez while the Giants are reeling from the Posey injury. Mesaraco is killing it at AAA, and it's only a matter of time before he's up here. With Hanigan under contract for next year, it makes sense they'd possibly look to move Ramon if the value is right.

CTR talked about that on one of his tweet and pretty much said the Giants don't really have much to give for him that the Reds would want. I would surely look into that.

I think he would take the assignment. I think he would take the money and try to work on things in AAA for a little while.

I'm just thinking that Lopez is fairly young still and has proven that he can play at a pretty high level...Many people hate the EV for Reyes deal because of not being able to resign Reyes after the season, I think they could actually resign Lopez if he would happen to tear it up for the Reds...I believe Lopez and Reyes are about the same age...Lopez has more pop, less speed and probably less glove, but your getting to keep EV at the same time...Not that the Reds are even considering EV for Reyes that's more than likely just a rumor and hasn't even crossed their mind...I could be wrong but Lopez with the short distance to the Left Field Fence at GAPB could equal 25 to 30 dingers...

They would still have to pay Gomes if they DFA'd him.

Not if he turned down the minor league assignment.

Actually they do since he has 5 years on MLB service.

Someone should probably tell John Fay that then...

Lopez is only really going to help a team as a second baseman, and that position is safely occupied in Cincinnati. Lopez doesn't do enough offensively to be a real contributor at third base.
