Very expensive for the Cal Ripken Experience... A lot of fund raising.

Sounds like a nice trip for a high school team. Do not take this the wrong way but this is something those of us at other schools expect Highlands programs to do.

Played a fall league game yesterday and lost to a Highlands team...........Kids were really young but played way above there heads. I am assuming they were all Highlands kids and the one little pitcher that threw most of the game was nasty. Hit the ball well throughout the lineup too. I only knew a couple of kids by recognition one being Jake Liggett who plays Bluegrass with my nephew and son. If the program is to get on the right track they need to have more players in baseball like this...................

The first pitcher for the Highlands team was Hector Molina, indeed followed by Jake Ligget. I only recognized a few of the other kids as they're 2 or 3 years younger than my son.

 

It would be nice if more Highlands kids played fall ball, but most also play football which makes it tough. Sunday was the only game my son played this fall, and I'm glad I stuck with my guns to not let him play more. Varsity football mop-up duty Friday night, JV game Saturday morning, 7 innings of catcher on Sunday, and then extra "bags" at practice on Monday. That's an awful lot to expect of kids more than once or twice a fall. I let him play fall ball back in 8th grade when it was only little-league football, and even then he ended up with an overuse injury towards the end of the baseball schedule.

 

Maybe if the schools would get rid of those darn classes, the kids would have more time for the extra sport!

You are correct. There is a lot of fundraising plus the parents pay some as well for the trip.

 

They will get a lot of field time in both a game environment and practice environment.

Well he by far had our best hit too.............Talked to one of the parents yesterday when I ran into him and he said they had 6 Highlands players and 5 Silver Grove players. Of those eleven players six of them were 7th or 8th graders..............although he did say the two really strong middle school players from SG he expects to see end up at Highlands by the time they hit high school (baseball first guys too!!!!). Getting all those kids out to play fall baseball against soph/juniors and winning (at my expense) :( will help the program in the future.

Didn't want to start a new thread yet, but I'm hearing some positive news coming out of Ft Thomas. Word is that Jeremy has gotten the blessing of anyone that really matters in Ft Thomas of taking his 2012 squad to Myrtle Beach for "Spring Break". Kinda like "Spring Training". The Cal Ripken experience. Don't know a whole lot about it, but it appears to be a very well ran program. These kind of things can only help the program head in the right direction. Kudos to Jeremy, the Principal, and School Board members for getting this done!

Smith was from the Grove? No wonder SG doesn't produce strong athletic programs. Seems as if HHS may be getting their better athletes.

Well lets qualify Smith was from the Grove but mom is the athletic secretary at Highland so that would not be unusual for a student to go with a parent, especially when he is that great of a football player. There are a couple kids in Campbell County that do the same.
