Nelson County Looks for New Head Coach

Featured Replies

Where did you make the observation that someone made me mad. You were the one that got it off topic by talking about Coach Rogers and not Coach Mason. So i decided to try to state where the real problem came in and that was when Coach Brown went to John Hardin.

But im not mad :thumb:

I stand corrected, Thank you. Back to the issue.

There are a ton of rumors floating around Nelson Co. about the reasons for Coach Mason's termination. Does anyone know the truth? I know the program and the county, but the way I understand it the HS Principal was 100% supportive and the AD was 100% supportive, but the FEMALE Super went alone to make this discision? Does he have a criminal background or something? The guy was the district COY 2 years running and is very well liked and respected by teachers, coaches, and parents? I can't imagine many coaches wanting to step foot in this mess? The local paper has not mentioned specifics about the rational for Coach Mason's removal and the SUPER, Principal, and AD have had very tight lips refusing ANY comment. I know the team has cleaned up thier act, as far as unsportsmanlike penalties, over the last 3-4 years...which I was proud of.

New Coach short list: (at least names from the community)

Mike Holcomb

Mark Brown

I have a feeling that Rogers maybe interested

He would be better off leaving because sooner or later the Graves County people who know football better than anyone will try and start running the program. Just ask Graves' last two coaches.

I was told AD Bill Broaddus and the Principal went in expecting a meeting to discuss improvements to the program/show of support and were blind-sided by Superintendent Jan Lantz's unilateral decision to terminate Mason. This was not the first meeting with those involved - they had met a couple weeks prior and there was a show of support. Apparently, a short laundry list of ludicrous things were given as a subterfuge. One of those apparently was that he was seen drinking at the Bourbon Festival. Horrors!

I don't know why Holcomb would want to leave Breathitt or Brown John Hardin.

You can take Mark Brown's name of the list. 100% positive he isnt coming back

Does anyone know where Coach Mason is going to coach at next year?

No news on where Mason might coach next year... News has it that Holcomb visited the facilities last week.... However compensation seems to be the largest hurdle.... Also Coach Gossett formerly of Fairdale is a name being thrown around the community....

I can't imagine why any established coach would want to get in this mess. I know Nelson County doesn't pay well. I think Coach Mason made less than $6K and did the field care on 2 fields. Gossett would be a great choice, but like I said, with a super that listens to 3-4 voices in the community rather than her HS principal and AD, who would come? I feel for the seniors to be, they are great kids.

I had the chance to speak with Coach Mason this week and he has NO CLUE what he and his family will be doing next year. It sounded like he has had a ton of assistant job offers (thanks to his CU bachground I'm sure) and a few coordinating positions (sounded like he was really interested in a position at PRP with CU alumni Chris Wolfe). He is waiting for the right opportunity to open up.

Any Chance Brandon Combs tries to make this his first Head Coaching Job?

Brandon Combs would make a great HC right now, but 3-4 people in the community have there "golden boy" and Coach Combs ain't him. There is a short list and nelson County doesn't pay enough. Tremble Co pays better!

Would anyone on the current staff really want this job if all of the accusations about the superintendent are true?

If Nelson County is looking for a coach to turn the program a round and do it the right way hen they need to go after Coach Donny Walker at Franklin County. I think this guy is doing some good things and will be suprised if someone doesnt tr and land him.

Coach B...Nelson County won't "go after" anyone! IMO...they were doing it right! No (very few) discipline problems on the field or off, had been winning and over achieved in 02-o3, numbers have dipped-but they do a lot more work in the off-season-this was year 4 of drug tests, coaches didn't complain about low salaries. The people that want Coach Mason out (3-4 non-parents) want Mike Holcomb (sp) from Breathitt. If they do not get him the same will happen to the next guy. I do not think a coach from the staff will apply.

I agree, they probably won't go after anyone. Their tradition should attract soem quality coaches and I haven't heard Walker's name in the mix. Nelson has fielded quality football teams and kids for a long time. I believe they are the last county school to win the 4A championship. Expectations are high and the support is usually great in the community. they promoted from within when Brown left, maybe it's time to look outside that box and try to revitalize this proud program. Holcomb's snag will always be money, he applied when Brown left and after Spalding i think.

NO, this is a misleading statement. While community expectations are high, they are NOT at the school, and the school provides little support for a program, school spirit and football morale is low, which is why they are in the state they are in . . .
