Three weeks to go and still no extension for Albert Pujols and St. Louis is starting to panic. Both sides have honored their vow that they would keep the talks under wraps, so this is pure speculation, but I feel like neither side is budging. I think the Pujols side is sitting around the 10 years 300 million framework and the Cardinals are more towards the 7 years 200, 210 million.

 

Pujols and his agent have set the spring training deadline. Mozeliak has said that the possibility of negotiating after the season is there, but that would be worst case scenario IMO.

 

So do you think the Cardinals will re-sign possibly the greatest player of this generation, or let him go and use the money elsewhere?

I think if they don't get it done by Spring Training, he's gone. Not sure it's in their best interest financially and otherwise to give in though.

Boston has Gonzalez. The Yankees have Teixeira. Who else will pony up that number of years and that kind of dough for a player that is, at the very least, in his early 30s?

Defiantly agree with the Mets. Angels just tied up a lot of the future with Wells. I think the Cubs could be a realistic option if it comes to it.

As a Cub fan I hope they do at $300 million for 10 years!

I'm not making a judgment on whether or not he is worth it. I'm saying that I don't think his contract will reach those levels.

I can see where your coming from. IMO the Cards will just have to rely more on guys like Lance Berkman and Chris Carpenter. Guys they can get low and then bank on them returning to form. That and they'll have to build up their farm system more.

 

I highly doubt the Cardinals will re-sign him if it will handicap them. Obviously they won't be making big time free agent signings but I just can't see them doing it knowing they won't be able to stay competitive.
