Team and Individual Stats

Featured Replies

I was reading the paper this morning and noticed that the Coaches' Poll only included eight votes both on the girls and boys side. I also found it interesting that several teams had no individuals listed amongst the leaders in any of the offensive or defensive categories. Do the coaches not care to vote? If so, why not? Curious to know who reports the individual stats for the respective schools. I noticed that small schools like Silver Grove, Bellevue, Brossart have individual stats and yet there are none for Highlands or Cooper.

All of the coaches get access to the Enquirer SID website and are eligible to vote. If they do not have access, they can request it from Erin Flege at Sports Websoft, Phone # 513-759-6945. Through the same website they have access to enter their stats. As SID for Holy Cross, I have access and I have not entered our stats from the last few games and I just recently got updated stats for our girls program. I hope to get these done by the end of the weekend. It used to be that we called in stats, but that went away about five years ago or so.

I know someone at Highlands keeps very detailed stats because the coach normally sends them home with the players after every few games and they are very detailed showing FG%, FT%, assist, rebounds, etc. It must be some sort of computer program because it calculates the players overall efficiency. I am unsure why they are not entered into the Enquirer site, maybe it just takes too much time or they need someone to do it for them.

Sounds like a good job for you to take over.

A lot of coaches won't do it because they think it somehow would be giving up state secrets to opponents (even though those same opponents get that info anyway when they scout).

A lot of coaches don't have the staff to track the stats effectively -- I especially see this on the girls' side of things, where volunteers are harder to come by -- and as a result are too busy.

And a lot of coaches are just lazy about it and can't be bothered.

Yea, I will squeeze that in amongst the 4th grade practices/games 4 nights a week and JV/Varsity games. LOL

I am a stat hound so to be honest I wouldnt mind. However, I think Schue has a point there and Coach Flynn may be very superstitious about putting the info out there for opposing teams to see. I guess as long as the players see how they are doing and maybe what they need to work on that is all that matters.

PM me your email JOAT and I will shoot you a copy next time I see one.

I can understand the stats reasoning but why not list a current roster either on the school web site or the KHSAA scoreboard. Is that too much work?

If I had the time, I would be willing to do it for the whole Region, but I do not have that kind of time either.

Agreed. What happened to the days when you could get every team's roster, hgt, wgt, etc.

I remember when the district tournaments sold programs with team pics and full rosters and that was in the days of limited technology.

Why would a coach want you to see who the weak free throw shooters were or who the best 3 pt shooter was. I think coaches prefer it private information.

You don't think coaches can grasp a little of that through tapes and scouting?

They should be able to but there is nothing better than a season or two of stats to understand a players strengths and weaknesses. Being a fan I would love the stats but the coaches I know do not want those released.

I am surprised coaches don't use film more after games. But perhaps I take High School ball too serious.

I have done statistics for two high school basketball programs over the last 18 years with every level of success and lack thereof. If high school coaches need statistics as their only preparation for their opponents, then there are some pretty desperate coaches out there. They better be taking a lot of their time scouting and watching game film, because I have never known statistics to be anywhere near the whole story when it comes to evaluating talent and preparing a basketball team for that talent. Take it from someone who has been part of a state champion and several district champions.
