I'd have to disagree here, TOG. Football, yes, but in basketball I think a lot of Covcath alum would consider the Holmes, Holy Cross, or even Newcath games much bigger rivalries than this one in basketball.

 

My reasoning for this is that Highlands simply isn't consistantly one of the better programs in the area on a yearly basis. Biggest rivalry in the 9th region is Holmes/Covcath.

 

I also think Highlands alums and fans would agree that Newcath is a bigger rivalry in basketball, than Covcath as well.

Two reasons why this is a big rivalry. The two schools in all sports is Yankees/Red Sox. This will be one of the best battle of the student sections of the year. I remember when the doors closed at CCH during the JV game a few years back. That is rare these days. The other reason is the fact that CovCath has knocked Highlands out of the 9th pretty many times under Coach L. It's not as big as Holmes in terms of getting to the region and Rupp, but it's as big as it gets during the regular season. The place will be rocking.

I would put the Cov. Cath. v. Holmes (basketball) and Cov. Cath. v. Highlands (anything) rivalries in the 1 and 1a slots. New Cath and Holy Cross are also great rivals, but just a smidge below.

Cov Cath has given no one any reason to believe that this game is going to be close. Cov Cath by a lot. But the rivalry between HHS and CCH is one that doesnt matter the sport or the players it is the entire student bodies of Cov Cath and Highlands versus each other.

Are ya kiddin' me? Aside from a couple of so-so years for the Bluebirds of late, I can't remember the last time in many years that they weren't one of the most consistent and better programs in the 9th Region. :eek: :ohbrother:

Holmes: 98-23 (+75)

Covcath: 70-22 (+48)

Newcath: 91-46 (+45)

Boone Co: 73-39 (+34)

Dixie Heights: 67-41 (+26)

You can do all the statistical analysis you want. The bottom line is that any sporting event featuring Cov Cath & Highlands is heated & one of the most anticipated games for players, coaches & fans.

My son a 2008 graduate of CCH confirmed that the Highlands game, from a student's perspective, was the biggest rivalry in the region. It's Highlands he said and they brought a bigger student section than any other school. The hate between these two schools is off the charts.

Well in this case, Walter didn't use the 2003-2002, the 2002-2001 or the 2001-2000 years where HHS went 18-2, 19-3 and 21-6 against NKy schools.

Walter... I wasn't speaking of this game in particular when I was commenting on you saying that Highlands simply isn't consistantly one of the better programs in the area on a yearly basis. Personally, I feel that the Colonels have a good 10 point upper hand going into this one, but with a rivalry such as these two teams have, the Colonels should NEVER take things lightly when they head on over to Ft. Thomas. Even in most past years when the Bluebirds have had a mediocre win/loss record, it is mainly due to the strength of their schedule and playing state powers in holiday tourneys, preparing themselves for the latter part of the season. They've typically been known for using the regular season as practice to get themselves tuned up for post season. When they won it all in 2001, they entered the 9th Region Tournament with practically the worst win/loss record of any team of the field of 8, but still pulled it out. We rarely have seen the Bluebirds at full strength thus far this season, so there's no telling what they'll be about by season's end, but I assure you that year after year Highlands have typically brought it and traditionally have been a 9th Region power house, even if they didn't get to Rupp every year. Coming into this game I'm certain that they'll bring the 'A' game that they are presently capable of with the Colonels probably prevailing by about 10, but it would be no surprise if the Bluebirds are playing a lot tougher by season's end. Are they going to Rupp this year? Probably not, but I doubt that they'd be any easy out for any team that will face them in the post season even with a mediocre win/loss record.

Prior to the 2010 regular season Cov. Cath. v. Highlands football game the prediction thread was filled with references to blowout scores, a running clock and J.V. kids logging major playing time. On paper, such predictions looked solid. But when it's the Birds and Colonels, you have to look beyond the stat sheet. Highlands graduated a great class of basketball players last year and have had more than their fair share of injuries this year. Cov. Cath. is on a bit of roll this year (Lex. Cath. and Ballard notwithstanding). Throw all of that out the window. Cov. Cath. travels to Ft. Thomas to play the Birds in their house...expect a blood feud. I will be surprised if the game is not very competitive and the outcome in doubt until the end.
