Warren Central 17 Bowling Green 14

Featured Replies

If my text message reports were correct, Bowling Green held a 14-0 lead at one point, but Warren Central rallied and kicked a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

Kinda? Certainly Bowling Green was favored. I thought they would win, and they were in position to do so. But for the second straight year I felt that Warren Central dominated most of the game. It didn't show up on the scoreboard for a long time, and credit Bowling Green for finishing on their opportunities and bending but not breaking until the 4th Quarter. The third quarter drive for BG was huge, as they bled 7 minutes off the clock in going up 14-0. They recovered a Warren Central fumble immediately after that, and had it on the WC 35 with a chance to put the game away. Central stood strong, got a stop, and Bowling Green went for it on 4th down instead of attempting a 46 yard field goal, a decision Wallace said in the paper he regrets. Central got the stop, went down the field for their first score. Bowling Green turned it over around their 40 on the next possession, and Central got the tie a few plays later. After a nice return on the kickoff, Bowling Green drove to the WC 33, and attempted a 50 yard field goal that was wide and short. Central then marched 63 yards in 11 plays to set up the finish.

True to my feelings, Warren Central had a shot if their defense held up and the offense did enough not to kill them. The Dragon defense just held the two highest scoring offenses in 5A to 6 and 14 points on consecutive weeks. The offense only had one bad turnover in Central territory, which put their defense in a position to succeed. I think Bowling Green didn't look to pass enough, as the freshman Fant was destroying them. But Warren Central is very, very good, and while last year was thought by some to be a fluke, we now have a pattern. It's possible it's like Grayson County/Warren Central, in that one team just matches up well with a superior opponent. I won't make any claims on those side of things, but Central has certainly proven they deserve recognition statewide.

Looks like 5A out west is officially up for grabs.

It has been Christian County's to lose all year.

The loss now means a potential second round matchup between Christian County and Bowling Green in Hopkinsville.
