Won't surprise me to see things out of the CovCath O that they haven't shown against any one else yet this year. This game for CovCath is the X game for Highlands last year. We'll see stuff that CovCath has been hiding all year. When CovCath is on O, I expect to see gimmick plays plus lots of screens and draws to slow down Highlands rush. When CovCath is on D, I expect to see lots and lots of blitzing. CovCath has had trouble stopping the run this year against strong running teams. I expect 8 in the box and a lot of them coming at the snap. I expect lots of loop stunts to try and mess up the man blocking assignments. Highlands O line has to really quick on the first two steps this week. I think CovCath will heavily focus on stopping the run and let what happens happen with the pass and hope that by blitzing to stop the run, they can get through and put pressure on Towles when he passes. If I'm right about the latter and the Birds O line can give Towles some time, should be a big night for Highlands passing game.

Welcome to BGP. Your questons are a little off thread, but since they do relate to the outcome of the upcoming game and thus the predictions being made in this thread I think they are fair. Based on your number of prior posts and the substance of the quoted post (not to mention the Join Date listed), you are obviously new to the site and perhaps the game of football, although I don't know the latter to definitely be the case and if not, I apologize. Your questions have been asked and answered a time or two (slight understatement) on here over the years. But I don't mind answering them again. I realize that with the way things are over in Park Hills, it's only natural for CovCath fans to want to examine successful programs. If I was a CovCath fan, I'd sure want to know how Highlands is able to be so successful, year in and year out. So being understanding of the situation, here goes:

 

 

1. "but why don't the "Birds" play some Ohio teams that are better competition?"-Great question. Fact is over the years the Birds have played some Ohio schools that are better competition. They played Cincy X last year, Colerain the year before that, Trotwood Madison the year before that, Elder and St Frances the year before that, Colerain the year before that, etc, etc. We've not had a lot of wins against the Ohio schools, but other than the blowout loss to Colerain in 05, the rest of the games have been very competitive. As a CovCath fan that has endured many blowout losses to the Ohio schools, I'm sure you can appreciate and respect the competitive games Highlands has played against those Ohio schools. The only reason that there is not an Ohio team on this year's schedule is because Cincy X wouldn't sign a two year contract in order to have the flexibility to move the Moeller game into that slot if Moeller would agree, which did occur. Otherwise Cincy X would have been on the schedule this year. From what I was told by Mueller, since this year is the second year in the normal two year contract cycle most teams on both sides of the river already had their schedules set for this year. So Eastern was the best available. Obviously, the schedule this year in particular isn't as tough as CovCath's is this year. But if one looks at whether Highlands has accomplished it's goal each year (which is to win state), then one would appear rather silly in questioning how Dale puts his schedule together year in and year out. It may not be to everyone's liking, but it sure works seems to work. I think one should be asking: is it a goal of CovCath to win state championships or does that not matter any more? If not, then kids interested in playing for a state championship contender need to know that. If so, then does the evidence suggest that playing CovCath's schedule is hurting or helping accomplish that goal? I believe strongly in teams benefitting from playing tougher competition to help them improve, but perhaps CovCath should first concentrate on improving playing against Ryle and NewCath, before using LaSalle, Lou X for that purpose. Maybe once CovCath can start playing competitive games against Ryle and not losing to 2A NewCath, they can again take on the better Ohio schools. But whatever it takes, this Highlands fan is cheering for CovCath to significantly improve and soon.

 

2. "Also, how does such a small area have so many amazing football players? " Another great question. It starts with the youth league. The league emphasizes playing time and instruction over winning and highlighting the super star youth players. Because all the kids get to play, as opposed to just standing on the sidelines or just holding blocking dummies in practice, they continue playing the game of football. As Dale has told the administrators and coaches of the youth league, their "job" is simply to keep the kids playing football. There are way too many other alternatives out there today, so if youth football is made an unpleasant experience, kids will go participate in other activities. Make it fun and keep them interested. Then when they get to their frosh year, its a matter of excellent coaching, excellent off season conditioning and a committment to winning from the players. As a wise coach recently said, Highlands takes 5'9" 175 pound kids and turns them into absolute maniacs (or something to that effect). And frankly, it's easier than people think. When you are a young kid and you hear about your older brother, your father, your cousins, your uncles and your grandfathers all winning state championships, your goal is to do the same (young kids, God bless them, are so impressionable). You get focused on wanting the same. So you commit yourself and your buddies commit themselves. With committed kids and excellent coaches, amazing football players are developed, not found.

 

3. "Do you recruit players from outside your area?" The program no doubt is attractive to kids outside of Ft. Thomas that want to play for a winner. Do we recruit? No, that would be illegal and trust me, if we illegally recruited then evidence of it by now would have surely been submitted to the KHSAA given the extreme amount of jealousy, envy and just childish hatred by adults towards Highlands. We have been blessed over the years to have attracted some very good football players from outside the city. Have there been as many as folks like to claim in an effort to rationalize their teams lack of success against the Birds? No, but we have no doubt greatly benefitted in some years from kids outside our area. As a CovCath fan, I'm sure you can understand how that can happen, as you've seen some very talented players from Boone County on your roster who wanted to attend CovCath just for the catholic education but turned out to be pretty good football players some how. People want to play for a winner. And when you can attend a school like Highlands with its excellent athletics and academics, with a very supportive administration, a very stable coaching staff (Dale has been here since 94 and a lot of the assistant coaches have been here a long time too), fellow players that also are committed to win and a community and fans that actually support the program, it's kind of attractive to out of district players and their parents wanting the best for their sons.

 

Thank you for the compliments about our great football teams. Best of luck to the Colonels. I'm hoping they soon return to their former days of glory, if for no other reason they would strengthen our schedule and perhaps quiet some of those folks criticizing the schedule. The last several years, such has certainly not been the case. Looking forward to the game Friday. I'm sure the CovCath players will play their hearts out and the coaches have been burning the midnight oil in preparation. I think it will be a hard fought game and the Highlands players best not overlook the Colonels.

Brad Fennell, Greg Gadd and Troy Kramer. This is the first full season they've been doing it, and they do a very nice job, IMO!
