Ryan Ernst interview with CovCath Head Coach Dave Wirth

Featured Replies

A ton of coachspeak but it sounds like the Colonels have a plan to get their program back to where it used to be. I liked his comment on the athletic talent and advantage it gives schools but also think its a bad idea to put lights in at Wooten Field. Keep the Tradition of playing on Saturdays !!!

The guy that did the interview fumbled around a lot but what I think it is scary when he said he is not able to look forward to Highlands because they have to worry about Scott.

The same thing Dale Mueller would have said if the situation was reversed. Just coach speak

Actually, I think Cov Cath's goal should be to get the program better than it used to be. IMO Highlands is way ahead of where they have ever been and if CCH just gets back to where they were in the past - having one great team every 3 or 4 years and records of around .500 in between - that isn't good enough. Wirth definitely seems to have his vision in place and if CCH can get to that level, I think he is the right person to lead them there.

Nice interview. Idk Coach but he reminds me of NewCath Principal Bob Noll who obviously played and coached at CovCath. If Coach W is as passionate about the kids, the program and his faith as Mr Noll is then those Blueboys will be just fine in the very, very near future. Get ready Birds fans, this is what everyone has been wanting, a competitive rematch with the Colonels and I think you are going to get it soon enough. Go Birds 20n10

I have enjoying talking to Coach Wirth from time to time and have found him to be a very open, honest and always thinking of the young men at the School.

SB not knowing Mr. Noll, I can't tell you if Coach Wirth is like him but I believe you will find that Coach Wirth, is what you described in Mr. Noll.

As far as the lights, I am split. I enjoy the Saturday afternoon games, but the reality of practice for the Frosh, JV and Varsity Football and Soccer teams plus week days games for soccer, leave litle daylight to hold the many practices that are needed to make improvement for the players.

He gave an excellent interview... I was very impressed with how this guy conducted himself.

I was a bit surprised to hear him describe the HHS-CCH rivalry game as "just one in 10" (meaning it's just one of 10 regular season games). I am curious to know how that answer sits with the CCH faithful.

I think the point Coach Wirth was trying to make is that if you focus your whole season on beating Highlands, you end up losing other games you should win. Also, with other very good teams on the schedule year in and year out (Lou St X, at least one GCL team, Cardinal Mooney a few years ago, etc) you have to prepare yourself for strong competition every week and all year long, not just focus on one game. I know from my discussions with Coach, he doesn't focus on winning a specific game, but in doing things the right way and consistently working to improve. He feels if you do that, the wins will come.

No doubt, from a accomodation standpoint the lights are a must to support the entire program and community. The field turf sorta gives the field unlimited use but the lack of lights limits its use. Cant really do one without the other, defeating the purpose imo. Question though? Just because they have lights does it mean they would have to change their Sat afternoon tradition? I love the Sat afternoon game, it gives you a college feel, except for the round two playoff games in Nov that daylight becomes an issue. Go Birds

I agree with you, Sweep. I played under Coach Noll and I met Coach Wirth in his first go-around at Cov Cath as an assistant coach. They have always reminded me of each other in most all aspects. He's a solid coach and a solid guy, and knowing what I do of Noll & Wirth, it's a heck of a compliment that you just paid to both of them. :thumb:

If lights go up they're playing most of their game son Friday nights. Heck, there are only 3 games at Wooten this year.
