Who has a good pulled pork BBQ recipes?

Featured Replies

Where would I find something like that, and what else do you need aside from the grill?

You can get a small kettle grill like mine or the next size up (I think it's $60-$70) at Wal-Mart or Meijer. You would need a meat thermometer, which can be had for less than $5. And whatever your costs are for seasoning and charcoal.

I would love to start doing this....What would I be looking at as a cost for a smoker and the necessary equipment, and where can I find them at?

I bought a Brinkman gas smoker at Home Depot for $149.00 and I love it.

Brinkman upright charcoal smoker is less than $100, a little more work than the electric but the prolonged exposure to the wood smoke is well worth it. Sam's Club has an interesting electric smoker for about $150.

If you want an easy and tasty pulled pork recipe here you go. It's not as good as doing it in a smoker but it gets rave reviews everywhere.

I usually throw it in the crock the night before, let it cook over night, pull it the next day.

You need a 7qt crock pot.

1 - 6-7lb pork butt

1 - Lrg yellow onion

4 - Tblsp liquid smoke

1/4 - cup water

1 - batch bbq rub (see below)

Directions.

- Do not turn crock pot on until everything is in it.

- Cut onions into quarters. You don't need to peel them just cut them and throw them in the crock pot.

- Mix the 4 Tblsp of liquid smoke with the 1/4 cup water and pour into the crockpot.

- Completely coat the butt with the rub. Thick and heavy.

- Put butt in crockpot, fat side up.

- Put lid on, turn crock pot on low, let it sit and simmer about 10 hours.

- Unplug and let sit for 2 hours or so to cool a bit.

- Pour off the liquid. (I keep the liquid, skim the fat, and use the liquid as a base for my own sauce.)

- Seperate the meat from the fat and the bones. You'll have to get your hands drity here.

- Serve on buns with your favorite sauce.

Rub Recipe

2 tsp paprika

2 tsp granulated sugar

2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp ground mustard

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

Throw it in the pot Saturday night before you go to bed, pull it the next morning. When you get done pulling it throw the remaining rub on it and mix it in good. Be sure to let us know how you like it.

Sounds pretty awesome. I think I may have to give that a try.

I realize you said pulled pork, but my “signature” pulled barbecue is actually pulled chicken. I started out making pulled pork barbecue, but then one of my good friends whose wife is Jewish asked if I could change to chicken in order to bring it to one of his family cookouts. I do still make pulled pork, but I more frequently have folks go on and on about my pulled chicken.

The only major difference in the two recipe's is that I make pulled pork by smoking a pork loin or pork butt the night before and then I do most everything the same way as I do with the chicken. But anyway…

Barbecue Sauce (make ahead of time):

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 4 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons red pepper flakes
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Pour vinegar, orange juice and worchestershire into saucepan, bring to simmer over medium heat, then mix in brown sugar and molasses. Once everything has come to a even consistency, add in spices. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. If desired, slowly mix in 4-5 tablespoons of corn starch before removing from heat to thicken sauce. Makes +/- 2 cups of sauce.

Pulled Chicken:

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 8-10 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 4-5 cups prepared barbecue sauce (depending on the consistency you like in your barbecue)

Place chicken in medium sized cooking pot, and add cold water until it nearly covers chicken. Cook uncovered over medium/high heat until water is brought to a boil. Add in garlic, onion, vinegar, hot sauce, and barbecue sauce, and reduce heat to medium. Cook 15-20 minutes, and remove chicken from sauce. Leave the sauce over medium heat as you pull apart chicken with forks. Put your pulled chicken into a foil pan as you pull it, and once all chicken is prepared, pour sauce over pulled chicken and mix the two together. You can serve it then and there, refrigerate it for the next day, or freeze it for later. Serves 7-8.

This turned out AWESOME!

I was at Meijer a few days ago and they had a smoker on sale for 15.99. I couldn't pass it up so I bought it a bag of charcoal and some apple wood chucks. I soaked the apple wood chunks overnight and fired up the smoker yesterday. I smoked two slabs of ribs and a pork tenderloin with some dry rub and a little apple juice in the water pan. It was the best meat I've ever cooked.

$15.99?? Holy geeze! On clearance or just on sale? I might have to run out that way and pick one up.

On clearance, they had a bunch of them still as of the other day. It's certainly not top of the line and took longer than probably a higer end model would but it worked well for me and of course it was my first try.

Hmm...well I think I'll go check that out all the same. Were you at the Meijer in Cold Spring or Florence?

Cold Spring, its back in the grill section on the very end right before you get to the furniture section.
