Ashland JV

Featured Replies

Spoke with a friend this afternoon whose son plays for the JV team at Ashland and he states that both Greenup and Raceland have cancelled their games. Anyone have any more info on this. Shame that those kids can't get some games in.

I noticed the Raceland vs Ashland JV game was scheduled for a Sat. morning instead of Monday night like the rest. Maybe that had something to do with it.

So it was changed? Or rescheduled? Or cancelled?

Greenup does not have enough players for a JV Team again this year.

Really? That can't be good. Holy Cow. I suppose that's a pretty solid excuse to cancel one.

That can't bode well for the future of GC football can it?

For a varsity team that gave Ashland all it wanted for three quarters, that is odd.

How does a school as big as GC not be able to field a JV team?

Yes, Raceland cancelled the JV game with Ashland. We played Boyd County Saturday and the JV game Monday and several of those kids will be needed Friday for the Varsity game @ Putnam. Ashland rescheduled the JV game from Monday up to Saturday. Since we have primarily Freshman and Sophomores playing JV, it is too close together for us to put kids on the field for that many games in a calender week. So, the decision was made to cancel the game. I am not sure why Ashland couldn't play on Monday.

Like spindoc said, the game was originally scheduled for next Monday, Ashland then rescheduled it for Saturday morning after a varsity game on Friday night. There is just no way we can play a varsity game then 12 hours later play a JV game.

Greenup only has 8 Freshman (not enough for a Freshman team), 6 sophmores and 7 juniors (5 of the juniors are regular varsity players.) There are only 37 total players, 18 of which are seniors. The numbers are down for the underclassmen quite dramatically. Last year there were not enough freshman for a team either and the JV team played about 2 games before the rest of the season was cancelled. It is unrealistic to expect a 14-15 year old to come out in the heat all summer long, particpate in 3-4 hour practices all season, weightlift throughout the winter and never get a chance to play in a game. Having a winning season may help get the numbers out next year but the experience will not be there.

The cancelling of JV/freshman games because of numbers is becoming more and more of an issue. I know East Carter has had to cancel a freshman game already, in addition to these spoken of here. Last year I bet tehre was 10 games cancelled by several different schools because of numbers. The numbers just aren't what they used to be...

Were those games at Ashland? If so, would revenue kept those games on the schedule had they been played at the opponents field?
