KY Shut Out of USA Today Super 25 Preseason Rankings

Featured Replies

The USA Today just released their 2010 preseason Super 25 and no Kentucky teams have been included. Surprisingly, no Cincinnati teams have been included in the ranking list.

I'm surprised Colerain isn't on the list. Aren't they returning a ton from a 1 loss team?

I'm not sure any Kentucky teams deserve to be on the list as we speak. Of the three or four that might eventually make it (X, T, Highlands, maybe someone else), they all have a few questions to answer early on. I wouldn't be surprised if one is there by the end of the year.

I'm reasonably certain Colerain lost at least two games last year (I think they started out the season 0-2). heck, I think they even missed the Ohio playoffs in 2009. I have heard they are supposed to be quite good this year.

The KY teams being left off doesn't surprise me. However, the top school in Cincinnati being left off does.

There aren't that many Kentucky teams worty of being on that list. Most states down south have 2 or 3 teams that are better than Kentucky teams, not to mention some other good football states such as Texas and California.

They missed the playoffs, but it was b/c they missed Lakota West and Manual wasn't the Harbin cow that they thought they would be. I do remember something about them starting 0-2 last year. However, they have 4 of the top 25 prospects in Greater Cincinnati according to the Enquirer. Additionally, three of those are linebackers. I thought with their reputation that that would have been enough to get them into at least the regional ranking.

Let me address your comments.

We missed the playoffs because the Harbin Gods did not shine on us. One more win by any of our defeated opponents and we are in. Que sera, sera.

We DID start 0-2 last year, losing to St. Xavier and Elder in back to back weeks. We then rattled off 8 wins in a row and beat playoff bound Middletown 10-7 in the process.

We have 14 starters returning, 7 on each side of the ball. We have the talent to be very good...but that is the case every year. It all comes down to Senior leadership and how THIS team melds together. If they fight and play hard for each other, there isn't a team on our schedule we can't beat. Right now, the focus is the final scrimmage against Moeller, tomorrow night at Colerain.

Finally, the USA Today rankings have become garbage. To have Glenville ranked in the top 25 is fine. But to have the Midwest regional rankings only show one other OH team is bunk, especially when that team is St. Ignatius who graduated a TON of kids.

I have no issue with Colerain being no where on the radar. It's better that way.

Seems like this year that it will come down to how well Williams can make the transition to QB. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the past couple of years have seen a lot of missed pitches and fumbles.

Don't see how this is a shock. I'd love to see one of our big boy teams play a South Florida or a Texas schedule. I don't think there would be too much talk about being top 25 nationally anymore.

The option has been no where near as crisp as it should have been, I would agree with you. And quite frankly, our prior QB was a little too much of a glory-hound and I don't think he was liked very much by his teammates.

All complete and total speculation and conjecture on my part. :sssh:

It seems that USA Today is working more closely with the Massey Ratings service, which (I believe) uses some kind of mathematical formula to rank teams. Does anyone know if this is influencing how USA Today makes up their Super 25?

Also, to clarify... I am NOT shocked about the absence of KY teams on the list; I AM shocked at the lack of any Cincy teams and only a couple of Ohio teams ranked. I believe MaxPreps recently named Cincinnati as the hub of prep football right now.

South Painola, MS is ranked in the top 5 and will be on my "to do" list while I'm down in Oxford for the Ole Miss/UK game.
