Coupon21 is busy getting ready for Friday Night! I believe Greenup County is much improved. We have a core group of boys who have played together for years and some new talent. These boys have worked hard and grown tremendously under Coach Copley's leadership (both physically and mentally!) There is a lot of pressure this year for the boys to hit the ground running and have the best season in years. With 18 Seniors, this class is the largest GC has had in a long time (or will have for the foreseeable future.) It is NOW or 4-5 years from now. The team is confident but I do not believe the schedule gives them the best opportunity to build on that confidence. CAN Greenup beat Ashland? Never say never... I want the Musketeers to give the Tomcats the fight of their lives. I want the fans from both sides to walk out of the stadium thinking differently about Greenup County (regardless of the scoreboard.) I have been around this group of seniors since 2nd grade JFL They have the HEART and Determination to make great things happen!!!

That was a good post. Sounds like you should give the pregame speech. I think you summed up what I am looking for Greenup to prove. Show the community that all the offseason talk isn't just talk again. Win or lose, make Ashland have to work for it.

We, Raceland, feel your pain. Our District typically fields 3 teams in the Top 10 with us, LCA and Fairview.

 

I will concede the fact that LCA is as tough of a district opponent for Raceland as Johnson Central is for Ashland. However, you must admit that Raceland has it A LOT better than Ashland in the first couple rounds of the playoffs.

 

Raceland gets the relatively weak district of Berea, Campbellsville, Williamsburg, Clinton County, and Lynn Camp to draw an opponent from.

 

Ashland gets a district where the 3 seed had a record of 4-6 last year but still came to Putnam Stadium and beat them 41-14.

I look for Ashland to throw the ball quite a bit with the experienced QB and athletic receivers they've got. They can easily run out of the spread formation as well, though, because it gets Rogers (I think he'll be their primary runner this year?) into space where he can utilize his speed. Does Ashland have a power running replacement for Alber this year? He was quite an effective runner last season because Ashland could spread the defense out so much. It left fewer guys there to try to tackle him and sometimes 11 were actually needed. :-) I think Greenup needs to bring a lot of pressure and get hits on the QB early and often so as to make him as uncomfortable as possible. Of course, this strategy would leave the door open for big plays which the Tomcats are more than capable of. I don't think Greenup can cover all of the weapons that Ashland has for very many seconds, though, so bringing extra guys from different places and getting to the QB is the only option IMO.

 

I look for Greenup to try to control the clock with their running game. Many have said that Greenup's line is twice as big, strong, and experienced as they were last year. Well, this will be the time to prove it. The only thing I see they could do to negate Ashland's overall team speed would be to line up and run it straight at them so the speed doesn't really come into play. However, I've heard Greenup has a QB this year that can throw the ball and he's got a big target in Hampton. Mixing in some quick passes over the middle might be enough to keep drives alive here and there. I'm sure Ashland will stack the line of scrimmage, particularly early in the game, in an effort to stop Greenup's running attack.

Ashland has a good QB with three or four quality receivers in Wetzel who proved to be a good receiver, Massey who is faster then light, and possibly Andrews from the TE position. Rogers will be the primary runner and has proved he can do it, so after the spread weakens a defense, you will see Rogers racking up the yards. You asked about the power running game, I expect Stafford to be the power back and will do well there. Ram you are correct, Stafford will be the FB. He is Trace's little brother - both are tough as pine knots. He will make a name for himself this year, IMO.

I believe in playing your strongest players versus the other teams strongest players and your weakest players against the other teams weakest players. I just don't think Greenup will have enough strong players to match up with Ashlands talent. Who will be the star of the game for Ashland? It will depend on who is Greenup's weakest defender. Ashland will be able to run the ball with Stafford and Rogers, and rushing Hunter will not do much, he is cool in the pocket, and he runs, he will hurt you there as well. I look for Wetzel to have a good game, Greenup will be worried about Massey and Wetzel will get the catches. And if Massey does get the ball, I don't think Greenup has anyone fast enough to keep up with him.

 

And don't forget Hardy, he is a man child, I've seen him in person and he is bigger, stronger, and faster then last year. He is a man.

 

I don't see Greenup keeping it close. I'm sorry to my Greenup friends, no ill will meant, but Ashland is just that good.

I got a feelin' the only way to keep the Tomcats from scoring is to play keep away!! JMO
