Calling all Highlands football historians...

Featured Replies

I need some help. I am compiling a list of all the bowls/classics Highlands has played in. Below is my list of what I have so far, but I know Highlands has played in a lot more Recreation Bowls/Thoroughbred Bowls than I have listed... I seem to recall a lot of the early-season Paducah Tilghman games were played in these bowls. I just can't find this information online. If anyone can fill in my list, please post your information on this thread. It will be much appreciated!

1957: Rotary Bowl at Covington Holmes High School (Covington, KY) – Highlands 20 Danville 6

1958: Rotary Bowl at Covington Holmes High School (Covington, KY) – Highlands 9 Louisville Flaget 20

1995: Thoroughbred Bowl at Tates Creek High School (Lexington, KY) – Highlands 42 Leslie County 44

1998: St. Luke Hospitals Champions Bowl at Highlands High School (Ft. Thomas, KY) – Highlands 51 Louisville Male 41

2000: Recreation Bowl at Montgomery County High School (Mt. Sterling, KY) – Highlands 42 Louisville Trinity 29

2004: St. Luke Hospitals Champions Bowl at Beechwood High School (Ft. Mitchell, KY) – Highlands 0 Campbell County 1 (forfeit, was 44-0 Highlands prior to forfeit)

Also, here's something I have a question about. According to my records, Highlands' record in 1957 was 10-0. However, someone once told me that Highlands' actual record that year was 11-0, since Highlands beat a team called Hamilton Catholic High School 1-0 in a forfeit win. I could not verify this game anywhere (I have no idea when/where it was played, or what the pre-forfeit score was). I was looking on the internet and came across a blog on Blogspot entitled "The Flex Option Offense." The page is mostly about Coach Homer Rice. At the very bottom of the page, it lists each of Coach Rice's seasons with Highlands. For 1957, it indicates Highlands went 11-0 (instead of 10-0). Even stranger, the weblog indicates that in that same year, Highlands defeated Massillon, Ohio to go 11-0 (this part is about three-quarters the way down on the webpage).

Does anyone know what the heck happened in 1957? Did HHS play 10 or 11 games? If they played 11, was the additional game a forfeit win over Hamilton Catholic or a win against Massillon, Ohio?

Not a Bluebird historian by any means but if memory serves the Birds played the Danville Admirals in First of the Season Bowls.

1977 Rec Bowl (?) Danville beat HHS something like 13-7 I think. Chris Jones was on the Danville squad.

1987 (? sometime in there) Danville played them again in maybe Throughbred Bowl. I think Ads won that one as well.

The Birds did go 11-0 in 1957. They finished the year by beating Danville in the Rotary Bowl Classic (20-6). I see no mention of Hamilton Catholic or Massillon, Ohio. The only Ohio team they played was the first of the season, against Deer Park, OH.

BF, where did you get the information about the Deer Park game? That one's not even listed in the records I've been given.

Here are the ones I could find. There are sure to be a lot more, as we played down state teams to start many seasons over the years. These, however, actually mentioned the name of a bowl game.

1957 - Rotary Bowl Classic: HHS 20 Danville 6

1958 - Rotary Bowl Classic: Flaget 20 HHS 9

1972 - Recreation Bowl: HHS 22 Lafayette 6

1975 - Recreation Bowl: HHS 34 Russell County 6

1985 - Thoroughbred Bowl: HHS 14 Harrison County 12

1989 - Thoroughbred Bowl: HHS 51 Jessamine County 8

It's in a Highlands football history book, which was published in 1993. It was a five-year project of the school's Journalism classes. It has the scores of every game, season summaries, and various features, interviews and trivia.

Thanks BF. I know the Birds went on to go undefeated and become the first 15-0 3A State Champion. And I also believe CC went on to win the 4A State Championship that yr posting a 14-1 record. I think though they claimed an undefeated season after dropping an exhibition game to Highlands. LOL. Go Birds 20n10

Highlands also played in the Recreation Bow in Mt. Sterling in the late 1960s but I don't know the years. I do remember attending the games there while in college. I believe they beat Madisonville and Sonny Collins there in the first game of the undefeated 1970 season also.

I believe they beat Madisonville and Sonny Collins there in the first game of the undefeated 1970 season also.
Yes, that one was HHS 27 Madisonville 14.

So has anyone found the records of the 2 games I mentioned with the Admirals. I was pretty certain they were "Bowl" games.
