Huge win for the Birds and nice to see the Freshman Murray come in and shut the Breds down the final 2 innings. That shows a lot of poise and confidence.

Awesome win Birds. Keep it going!

Excuse the long post in advance.

Small Ball v. Long Ball

4th inn was the key to this game. In the Top, NCC had 1st & 3rd w/ 1 out leading 2-1. First, Liggett keeps NCC honest by not allowing the usual steal of 2B. Then, he picks off the runner on 1B. 2 out, man on 3B. Strikeout and NCC fails to capitalize on a huge chance.

*Liggett leads off the bottom of the 4th (how often do you see it? Guy who makes huge defensive play leads off next half inning!!!). Long single to the gap in RF.

*Dill battles after failing to get a bunt down and eventually hits a chopper down the 3B line that stays fair for a single. (1st & 2nd - no out.)

*Hebel gets a bunt down with runners moving. Places it between P and charging 3B. I think SS was covering 3B, so all hands are safe. (Bases loaded - no out.)

*Cain blows 2 fastballs past Mason to get him 0-2. For whatever reason, decides to throw him a 0-2 curve and Mason lashes it to RF. (For my $, you keep throwing him gas until he shows he can catch up to it.) (Liggett & Dill score. 3-2 HHS. 1st & 3rd - no out.)

*?Gold? for HHS gets down a suicide squeeze. (Hebel scores. 4-2 HHS. 2nd - 1 out.)

*? for HHS walks. It appears Mason forgot there was nobody on 1st and starts trotting to 3B. Realizes his error and turns on the jets and beats the throw from a surprised NCC catcher. (1st & 3rd - 1 out.)

--MEMORY IS A LITTLE FUZZY FROM HERE ON OUT, SO CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG

*? gets down another suicide squeeze. (Mason scores. 5-2 HHS. 2nd - 2 out.)

*? on 2B steals 3B. Catcher's throw sails into LF and ? scores. (6-2 HHS. Nobody - 2 out.)

*NCC gets 3rd out.

SUMMARY -- HHS scores 5 runs on 2 solid hits, 1 Baltimore chop, 3 bunts (2 suicide squeezes and 1 to advance runners where batter was safe), 1 SB and 1 throwing error by NCC.

NCC hits a HR in the 5th to cut it to 6-3. Another 2 run HR that barely clears the CF fence cuts it to 6-5 and chases Rizzo. Murray gets 3 outs without further damage.

Top of the 7th, NCC batter singles after Murray falls behind in the count. After getting an out (K?), sharply hit ball to 3B is booted by HHS and then thrown away. Not sure if they could've turned 2, but definitely should've gotten the runner at 1st. Instead, 1st & 3rd with 1 out. Murray induces hard hit ball to 3B who handles cleanly, looks runner back and gets out at 1st. 2nd & 3rd w/ 2 out. Soft dribbler to Dill at 1B who takes it himself and HHS wins.

As mentioned in other threads, it is a true shame that this game had to occur at the "play in" game of #4 v. #5 as drawn out of the hat. It would've made a great district championship game. That said, Birds now need to focus their attention on Bellevue on WED and make sure there is no let down. On any given evening, anything can happen -- 1 team may hit line drives all night right at the opponent while the other team gets bloop single after bloop single. You just never know. Take care of business and get to the Championship game. Great win, but that was yesterday. Focus on tomorrow.

I'm surprised HHS could score 6 off Cain. He is very good.

It was total self destruction on the part of NCC in the 4th. Highlands preyed on a disshelved NCC defense by aggresive baserunning forcing error after error. I don't know how many runs were earned but I do know that errors fueled this upset. Nonetheless, good win for HHS.

If that's the pitcher that threw against Ryle this past Saturday, he did a nice job. He should be a nice pitcher for HHS over the next few years.

Congrats to the 'Birds! Big win for them

Year after year NCC's talent is waisted. Nothing new this year, fundamental baseball is becoming a thing of the past. Congrats to Highlands, you came to play.

How many senior's does NewCath Graduate?

Tough way to end the year. One bad defensive inning and the whole thing can unravel.

That's the problem with one and out tournaments. Given the time constraints, however, I don't know what else they could do.

The 4th inning did not cost them the game. One error scored one run, thats all

Was all this not in the 4th inning?

Was all this not in the 4th inning?

Yes. I suspect senior's point is that NCC did not defensively unravel in that inning as alluded to by other posters. 1 error is all I recall in the 4th, but I could be wrong. Yes, there were opportunities for the defense to step up (fielding Hebel's SAC bunt and getting an out, throwing out Mason on his mental lapse trotting to 3rd on a walk with no one on 1st, perhaps catching the 1st suicide squeeze in the air which would've completely changed or ended the inning, but that would've been a spectacular catch, etc.), but they were not errors.

didn't NCC win the All A and 9th Region in 2008? Region semi's in 2009? This wasn't a "bad" year maybe a rough one.....Highlands is a good team!

Mental errors don't show up in the box scores.
