Last night District Seeding Game, saw Stein at SS, Severson in RF, Reese in LF (all starting) and Lankeiht Catching in the last three innings when Matt Klein came in to pitch in the 5th!

While I agree that Coach Krumps plays who he believes helps him win NOW, with a slight bias towards Seniors (as it should be), I do wonder if some of the 9 Juniors should be allowed to play some JV. Even if they only play one game a week with the JV, it could help them stay sharp.

I know there is a big debate about whether Junior's should play JV, but I am of the belief that they should be allowed. I would still keep a predominately Sophmore JV, and perhaps I would only play Soph and below during tourn. time. However, I think it is tough on a kid mentally, and somewhat physically to not play at all for weeks upon weeks.

It is a tough situation for a coach, but I think using the JV games as an additional way to get kids PT makes sense.

I wouldn't feel your questions were unfair, if you had at least attended a game!

You can have your opinion and that's no problem, but without even attending one single game this year, how can you say he is wrong? By not attending practices or games you can't evaluate the talent on the diamond so whats makes you think the Seniors are not better? This group of Seniors as Sophomores, were the runner-up in the JV tourney so give them a chance.

If you hold a coach to how many Regional Championships he has won as a bench mark of how good a coach he is, then there are very, very few good coaches in all of Ky that are any good, no matter what sport they coach in!

2002 39-3 Won state championship

2003 25-11 Lost to BC first round of the region BC won the Region

2004 27-6 Lost in District to Ludlow (biggest upset in Ninth Region history)

2005 31-8 Won Region lost in semi state to LCA who won the state tourney that year

2006 21-13 Lost in first round of the region

2007 27-10 Lost in Ninth Region Finals

2008 27-9 Lost in Ninth Region Finals

2009 33-4 Lost in Ninth Region Finals

So since 2002 they have either won the region or lost to the regional champion in 6 of the last 8 years.

You know KL I am agreeing with you now, as after looking at the above, lets fire Krumps and Eck, because they have only won 230 games, one state title and 2 regional championships in 8 years. Darn those two for making the errors and not getting the hits in those championship games. Fire them all!

I feel comfortable forming my opinions based on the excellent recaps you have provided on the games and team, as well as all the other information which has been given on here, as well as from discussions with some of the boys and parents. I do not know if any of the younger guys should be playing more. However, IMO, I don't really see it hurting much. Seems like maybe some are starting to get a little more time which in the long run (this year tourney and next) should be good for the team.

I am not against this years seniors in any way shape or form. However, I feel that Coach could do more to develop the younger guys as well. I read so many times on here early this season that the guys who were playing were making basic baseball mistakes. How can Coach prevent that from happening next year? I would think getting guys experience this year would help, wouldn't it? If it means a couple more losses during the season, to have a stronger team come tourney time this year and next year, I do not see a problem. Maybe he doesn't get 20 wins in a season. So what? I would think winning region would be more important to the guys than 20 wins.

As far as measuring a coach - yea, unfortunately region championships seem to be how a coach is measured. (Yea, I know he should also be measured on how the young men mature and grow academically but I do not want to get into that here.) Around here it certainly seems to be has a coach won the big prize.

I recognize the Ludlow beating as the biggest upset, but how many of the other losses were upsets as well? How many upsets has Coach Krumps pulled off? Things like these should also go into the evaluation of a coach don't you think?

And yes I had heard about the young guys and their trouble. Would they have played anyway? Who knows? Only Coach - and maybe you!! :D

I agree 100% The kids need PT. That is one of the issues that I have been having with the Coach's decisions the last few years. Riding few guys, and favoring the seniors IMO a bit too much - not developing the program, and all the players. I will admit that part of the issue could be with the kids as well. How many kids are working during the off-season on their game? Working during the season on their own? Seems to me that less kids do this than use to be the case. If that is true, a coach needs to find a way to develop the talent he has.

3 juniors have gone down to get some ab's or pitch some innings. You must realize however that the jv team currently is having a pretty solid season and it's been sophmores for the most part who have done it and more than a few of these guys will probably start or play significantly next year. Don't forget that when the current junior class was playing jv last year, there were 5 frosh that were starting last year. In other words, the soph class is pretty strong both at varsity this year and at jv.

I didn't know that. I have only been to 2 JV games, and only Sophomore's and one Freshman were there. I am very glad to hear that guys are getting some needed PT. Based on that, I think Coach is doing it the way it should be done.

I agree the Sophomore class has a solid core of players. My only concern is that they don't have any "dominate" pitchers. They have some good pitchers, but no one stand out to build a rotation around.

No it is not a joke. What does winning the McNick game mean for this team? Does it matter in district seeding or anything? No - so why not get some time for some guys who you made need to contribute come later this year. Even if you do not need them this year, it will certainly help come next year right? Get some guys some experience. Are we even certain the Seniors are the most talented on this team? I am not expecting an answer to that question by the way.

McNicholas is a GCL school. Granted, they're one of the smaller GCL schools, but a solid team nonetheless. You win as many games as you can.

You win spots this early in the season in practice & in the preseason. If those who have won the position don't perform, they will be replaced. I'd give the edge to any upperclassman, and give them the first opportunities to win / lose the position.

Very happy to hear this. I guess my biggest fear was that the younger guys were not getting the chance to develop. Seems like the current junior class is not as strong baseball wise. If they did not play much last year at JV or Varsity and JV this year.

KL (and ye of little faith), Krumps is playing the best players regardless of whether they're srs., jrs, soph's. He doesn't care what grade you're in, who your daddy is, or anything else; just whether or not you make the team better. That's the way he has always done it, that's why last year they had several 2,3, and 4 year starters.

The starting lineup he had last night included 7 seniors and 3 sophs. Not only are the seniors generally the best players on the team this year, some may receive regional recognition at year's end. Some of the seniors have opportunities to play college ball, if they choose. The underclassmen are good, will eventually be very good, and will be a big part of the teams success this year as they gain experience. TOG has shown much discretion with his posts, not to single out a player's transgressions with his recaps. KL, you have truly misconstrued what's going on. Come watch a game and get informed. This is a team that has the potential to win the region. At this point they're a notch below a couple teams, but not by a lot. I think they've proven that they can play with the best teams in the region, and in fact beat #1 & 3 ranked teams in the region, and played the #2 ranked team in two very tight games and they had late leads in both games. McNick was highly rated in GCL Division II. They've beaten Stansberry and West, 2 of the top pitchers in the region. CCH has had some growing pains due to the inexperience of some players, not talent. If they make a couple more plays, or a couple more hits per game, they're 8-2. Krumps is developing players and is debugging things. The changes that you see the balance of the year will be more subtle, than drastic. They are 5-5, not a record that anyone at CovCath is happy about, but most reasonable people realize is a developing team that continues to improve in a wide-open region. Stay tuned.

Again, I agree with all of you that Krumps certainly knows more about winning baseball games than I do, heck he probably should be managing in the majors by now. :D Seriously though, my concerns and questions have been generated by comments that others on here have made - and for the most part all center around the development of players for later this year and years down the road. (Well, there has also been the discussion of the teams not winning the big one which is unfortunately used to gauge the success of the coach around here) I have seen the improvement and have been more happy that he seesm to be getting guys the time they need to be able to contribute down the road.

All true and Krumps is among the very top in coaches in No. Ky, but there was a time not so long ago in CovCath baseball lore where the Colonels prided themselves on never losing to another Northern Kentucky school, but alas, times have changed.

History, have you noticed that some of the teams like Ryle, Conner formerly Boone County and HC (they have a Coach who played with me at CovCath) who have beaten CovCath have Coaches who are former CovCath students/baseball players of Krumps!

Good point. I simply think the days of domination for one school in a sport are pretty much over in every sport. Very impressive what Boone County has done in ladies basketball, Highlands and Beechwood in football, and CovCath and Beechwood in baseball. Probably should add St. Henry in track and field. These will be the exceptions going forward.
