The Good: David Brueggman gives Coach Krumps 6 2/3 innings of three hit baseball, while only walking three and striking out three. Outstanding job young man....

 

The Bad: CovCath earns seven base hits but strand seven batters and just doesn't seem to string any hits together this season. Three runs scored of which one was unearned, on seven base hits, isn't the way you win many games, without outstanding pitching.

 

The Ugly: Really not anything totally UGLY today.

Pee Wee's Place Offensive play of the game:

 

CovCath bottom of the sixth and the game is tied 1-1. Stayton leads off and goes U-9 for the first out. Martin hits a sharp ball right down the third base line but the McNick third baseman is a stud and he dives to make the stop and his throw gets the runner at first. Coach Eck of CovCath appeals the call to the infield umpire who in turn ask the home plate umpire for help and the home plate umpire changes the call to safe. BTW I thought the first baseman was pulled off the base by the just a hair wide throw to the outfield side of first and a picture I saw of the play, proved the home plate umpire made the correct call. Man on first, one out. Schlagbaum hits the ball into the hole between the SS and the third baseman but the only play the SS has is to first base. Two outs, man on second. Severson walks on four straight pitches. Man on second and first. Sophomore Jake Lankheit comes to the plate and on a 2-1 count hits a rope right down the third base line to score Martin for the go ahead run. Men on first and third and Reese is sent in to Pinch run. Reese steals second and when the catchers threw goes over the second baseman head for an E-2, Severson comes home with CovCath third run of the game and what turns out to be the winning run.

 

The BAWAC Inc. Defensive play of the game:

 

McNick up in the top of the fifth inning. First batter gets on via E-5. Next batter goes U-7. Man on first, one out. Next batter up and man on first steals second base. One out, man on second. Runner then gets him self picked off by the CovCath catcher, Matt Klein in a 2-4-5-6 put out for the second out of the inning. The batter then goes U-9 for the third out.

 

Grubers Grill star of the game: "You have got to eat a Mary Burger" when you attend a CovCath game! Co-Stars for this game are:

 

Senior David Brueggman and Sophomore Jake Lankheit. David for his pitching and Jake for the big hit to put the Colonels ahead in the game in the sixth inning.

For the record I think the umpire erred in asking for help. Its your call. The only reason I can see an umpire asking for help is he simply couldn't see the play due to being blocked by a player. Where does it stop? Does Eck get him to "ask for help" on a bang bang play?

 

It would be like me calling a foul on a player but then a coach says he traveled first and I then go to my partner. Are we going to consult on every play?

Don Martin had a great camera angle on the play and it clearly shows the first basemen foot (heal) comes off the bag in his picture frame, as the McNick first baseman had to stretch too far to make the play!

The first base umpire had no way to see the first baseman back heal/foot coming off the base, but from my seat, he clearly pulled it off the bag and the home plate umpire clearly saw it too.

 

BTW any play the umpire wants help on, he can get it. In baseball it happens all the time and there is no rule against it but in saying that, the umpire making the call doesn't have to ask for help either, it's totally up to him!

Clyde it takes a lot of time to type this all out! I use PA = Plate Appearances not AB meaning = At Bats. All you have to do is subtract the walks etc. from the PA's to get the AB's. It's quicker for me, to just type PA's.

 

Now if you want to donate to me a laptop and the software, I can do it much quicker but..... I don't have the $$$$$.....

No I'm pretty sure TOG means he came up 4 times, 1 HBP, meaning he gets 3 ABs.
