Murray State University - Info Needed

Featured Replies

Anyone from the Northern KY area been to or currently attending Murray?

My daughter is looking at this school and I would love to find a contact from the N. Ky area that she can converse with to get some personal insight.

Feel free to PM me if interested.

Nobody yet? No one has anything to say about Murray?

I can probably help you with whatever questions you may have.

I'm also considering Murray for their Telecommunications program.

Do you have any info about that particular program, bugatti?

I generally hear good things about the TSM program with some local opportunities to boot. I do not have any insightful details though.

Some general questions that she has and she is looking at a degree in Psychology (just not sure what area yet...maybe Cognitive Therapy):

--Being 5 hours from home, what is there to do during down time (like she is going to have any downtime:D)

--For someone who is not as outgoing as most, it is a friendly campus?

--Is the campus safe? Can you walk from building to building or do alot of students have bikes?

--Are the dorms nice and explain the dorm set-up? Seperate communities???

These are comfort questions but some that are weighing on the top of her brain right now.

There's plenty of intramurals/greek life and clubs and organizations to fill the "down time." Also with each department, IE the Psychology Dept, they have their own clubs that do stuff I'm pretty sure.

I think the campus is very friendly.

I'd say campus is safer than most campus's, however over the years there have been isolated random incidents. I wouldn't suggest any female at any campus walk alone at night but that's just my opinion and I knew plenty of girls who did. And if she lives on campus she will easily be able to walk to any class with 15 minutes.

They have 2 new dorms (I believe to be Richmond and Clark) that I believe are set up on seperate bedrooms with a common living area for up to 4 people. They also have an all girls dorm (Springer Hall) as well if she doesn't wish to live in a co-ed dorm, however the coed dorms are divided by floors of boys and girls, such as floors 1-4 will be boys and 4-8 will be girls. Hester and Elizabeth college I believe are the only dorms that have community showers. White and Regents are both Dorms where 2 rooms share 1 Bath room and they also allow freshman to park there where as the rest of the dorms require freshman to park at the football stadium during the week.

The dorms do a solid job on integrating their residents with activities. There will be plenty for your daughter to do in Murray.

theoldguy will be sure to help you out as he is in the same situation as you being from your area with a kid at MSU.

Murray is a very safe community.

What is around the area, outside of campus? Movies, stores, pharmacies, etc?

theoldguy: is your child a current high school senior? It you care to share, girl or boy?

Murray is a decent size community with a progressive feel so just about anything you want is within walking distance of the campus. Theater, pharmacies, shopping, book stores, tons of restaurants, churches, coffee shops, etc.

Murray also has a transit system that students get to ride free through town.

I wouldn't trade my time at Murray for anything! Your daughter will meet a lot of people thru there summer O, that's how I met buggatti, just don't ask his opinion on the Murray Dairy Queen! The RA's in the dorms do a good job of arranging activities! Greek life at MSU is very cheap compared to most Universities and you make a lot of lfe long friends and it's a great support system and a way to get involved with stuff on campus and that doesn't mean just parties either!

Now that you brought the topic up...please be honest on the partying. She is not one for this and would prefer to steer clear.

Movies--Nice movie complex called "The Cheri"

Stores--Not so much, but Paducah isn't too far away, has all the necessities

Pharmacies--Local and chains....lots of pharmacies really close to campus

Loved my time at Murray also! Very good school imo...if she gets involved in clubs, organizations she will find plenty to do!

Thanks for the comments so far. The scholarship committee meets this weeks so saying lots of prayers for some tuition help to come our way. If our prayers are answered we will be making the road trip down in a few weeks.

Any pointers on a place to stay or any sites to take in while we are there?

Partying is a choice. There are many like minded individuals your daughter can hang out with that will share her same interests.

Many chain hotels in town and of course you will be close to campus no matter where you are. If you are looking for a getaway type vacation, Kenlake State Park is 15 minutes down the road; Lake Barkley is 30 minutes down the road. Murray is just minutes away from Kentucky Lake.

Murray probably does lack in "sites" but it is a lovely community. Take a ride on the trolley through town for $.75. The campus itself is enough to take in just walking around. Extremely well kept. Generally something is going on each weekend.
