Shelby County 42 South Oldham 41 (OT)

First Round of Girls' 8th Region at Simon Kenton

Wells hits two free throws with 1 second left in OT to lead Rockets to win. I believe she led Shelby County with 16. That was matched by Whitfield for South.

Officials really let them play tonight. IMO, Shelby should have turned the ball over on a walk with 11 tics left...but, no call. Will be interested to see what Colonel Mike has to say about the play.

Rockets move on to face Simon Kenton Friday night in the semi's.

It was a very entertaining game to watch. I heard a couple folks say she walked, but I wasn't watching the ball right then, so I didn't see it.

What about a Freshman stepping up with 1 second left and hitting two free throws!! Congrats to Shelby.

I will have to say, for my first time seeing her in person, that I was very impressed. Hard to get a read on her, as she showed very little emotion (either high or low) throughout the game. But, when she found herself open and she calmly stroked that 3...I knew she had icewater in her veins. So, hitting both of the free throws didn't surprise me then.

Told the guy beside me that it's scary that she's just a freshman!

Survive and Advance. Clutch free throw shooting by Whitfield sending game into OT and by Wells to win the game down 1 with 1 second to go in OT.

I thought this would be South Oldham's year to get to Bowling Green. Wrong again.

I'd guess that you weren't the only one.

Just before that the (SO) player slid 4 feet with the ball in her hands and no call. Have you ever seen so many missed FT's in a half of basketball at this level?

I thought play by both teams was very sloppy. Shelby sagged back defensively and almost dared South to shoot open jumpers. It looked like, at times, that both teams' best offensive play was to throw a shot up and go get the rebound for a put back.

If Shelby plays like that again on Friday...your gals should have no problem advancing to the finals.

It will be interesting to see if having refs from outside the 8th region will be a factor as the toruney progresses - or if it was any factor last night. It's pretty unusual for the region go "go outside" for officials, at least for the last few years it has not been done.

Was an entertaining game to watch. These officials called very little compared to all the tick-tack fouls that were called in the SK/Owen game.

I thought Shelby played good defense when it mattered. Held McGuffin to just 7 points. Wells, the freshmen, along with the 16 points pulled down 21 rebounds and had two blocked shots. SCHS's free throws were awful. The game would not have been close if SCHS knocks down their normal 62%. I think they went 5-19. Wells missed a free throw at the end of the district championship against ACHS. Looks like she focused better last night. That's her main issue...focus. When she is dialed in she is scary good.

Whoever made the comment about her emotion...you saw it all tonight. She's the same whether SCHS is in a nail biter or a 30 point margin. She just loves to play. She's improved a lot from the beginning of the year. Found her confidence. She's as strong as any girl in the state.

Am very surprised that they voted to go outside the region for officials this year and I do think it made a difference in the game. The lady was down right terrible with some of her calls - charge on Dye in first half, 3 second call on McGuffin when she wasn't even in the lane, even the foul call on Wells on the out of bounds play was pretty inconsistient to the rest of what they let go. Again, she was awful !!!!

South played with 4 sophomores and one senior for the majority of the game and subbed very little last night - with that being said, McGuffin was held to 7, really not her best game last night, and the rest of the crew was not able to make up the slack. Tough to lose but you have to make yuor free throws- lots of opportunity to win, just couldn't finish the deal. I would say that offensive rebounding by Shelby was HUGE the entire game. It is the little things, the fundamentals, that win games - even despite poor officiating.
