The Campbell County JV Camels captured the 37th District JV Championship today, defeating the top-seeded Brossart Mustangs 44-34.

 

If timing is everything this wasn't very good timing for the Mustangs who had defeated the Camels 43-33 back in the Crosstown Classic, losing the services of John Schack to a knee injury, and freshmen Justin Saunders, who is presently the varsity's sixth man.

 

The Mustangs missed Schack's presence on the boards as the Camels controlled the rebounding department in this one. Junior Daniel Schultz played his final career JV game, putting 20 points on the board to lead all scorers, in the losing effort.

 

Campbell County jumped out to a 11-3 advantage after a quarter and led 19-9 at the half. Brossart mounted an early second half rally, cutting the Camel lead to 24-18 at the 2:30 mark of the third quarter, but that was as close as the Stangs would come on this night, as the Camels pulled away to post the 44-34 win and capture the 37th District Championship.

The Mustangs conclude their JV season at 13-6.

Congrats Camels. They came out very strong and managed to hold off the Mustangs. I was fortunate to make it to this one given the other changes in my life (see picture to left). The future is bright in Camel Land.

I may be wrong, and very well could be, but how could the "core" of last years freshman team be on the court at the same time? I thought Fardo was starting Varsity? Maybe I am ignorant, but I thought I saw that somewhere. Also, Bezold didn't even come out this year...and he was a MAJOR factor in Brossart's success last season.

I agree MACLA, after freshman ball its a whole new ball of wax. The JV team is going to be a mix of players from the Soph/Jr classes.

It sounds as though you are being critical of our coaching staff for not permitting freshman Justin Saunders, or more far out - dressing sophomore Zach Fardo, for the 37th District JV Championship game. Whatever, I feel you are out in left field.

 

Unfortunately, with John Schack out, you are right, we didn't match up very well, but it sounds like you might have also liked to have seen Saunders and Fardo in the lineup to re-invent the '09 Freshmen Champs team (plus Saunders and our two JV juniors). Fardo has been a consistent varsity starter and Saunders is presently our 6th man. While it would have been nice to defeat the Camels and win our 5th District title in 8 years, we have bigger fish to fry and certainly aren't going to jeopardize, or worse yet, prostitiute our varsity program, to make that happen. The '09 freshmen nucleus could all be back in the fold next year and we will see where it goes from there.

 

Campbell County outplayed us badly in the first half, but after some halftime inspiration our guys came out and played the Camels even in the second half (25-25), so it is not out of the relm of possibility that if we had played with the same resolve in the first half as we did in the second half that a Mustang victory could have been achieved.

 

Teams have to suck it up and play short-handed at times - that's the nature of the beast. Unfortunately for the Stangs, this was one of those occassions.

Fardo never even entered my mind, I don't even think that they needed Saunders to win (would of helped). There's no doubt Brossart did a better job in the second half of matching up.

And do not forget one of the freshman, Trevor Bezold, from last year's frosh regional champs, who was a starter, did not even try out this year.

Brossart Mustangs though they peaked at the right time were only 16-9 last year. Not a "dominate" Freshman squad. This year's freshmen without the aide of Saunders finished 17-7.

True on all accounts BUT ...........

The freshmen W-L record is more an indication of the freshmen program's philosophy than a win-at-all-costs mentality at that level. Longtime Mustang Freshmen Coach Mike Schack has long employeed an "involve everyone" philosophy with our freshmen during the regular season. The player who might be determined to be our 10th man this year (10 players on the team) played in 22 of our 24 freshmen games. Didn't just make a token mop-up appearance, but probably played in both halves, meaning that the 6,7,8,and 9 players did the same. How many freshmen teams with standout records can boast that??? I'm not saying it works for everybody, but it works for us, perhaps at the cost of a W or three along the way.

 

Last year we sustained 4 of those 9 losses during the regular season to NCC 40-38, Holy Cross 31-28, Dixie Heights 38-35, and Grant County 51-46. I contend that if those games were district/regional games you would find them on the other side of the ledger putting that 16-9 record at a more representative 20-5.

 

This year our freshmen (minus Saunders) were 10-1 in our final 11 regular season games with the loss coming to LexCath. They lost in OT to Scott in the district finals who are now the No Ky Freshmen Champs, after having defeated them 43-31 earlier in the season in the battle for the district's top seed. I don't think we need to make any excuses for this freshmen group, nor do we need to be tagged as something less than what we are as a result.

 

In a year or two what these guys did as freshmen will be totally insignificant. I could point out freshmen teams that appeared to be destined to become regional champs, that were lucky to make it out of the district by the time they were seniors. The present NoKy three-time JV champs haven't won a 9th Region championship since 1996.

Don't be surprised to see Trevor back in a Mustangs hoops uniform next year.
