This is one that strikes me.

Often, I've been chastised for my view that it is not our place to judge others based in part on this scripture. But, right here..this is absolutely stating that judgment is reserved for God. That judging others is bound to land you up against God in an unfavorable light. Paul tells us that those of us who pass judgment are guilty as well of the same things.

How does this reconcile with the thought that it is our Christian duty to pass judgment on others?

On this Scripture, I still wonder if there is a difference between me showing you a Scripture that indicates that something you are doing is contrary to what God has indicated the life we should strive for and what "judgement" is.

God's righteous judgement is the end of times and where we will spend eternity.

Surely, that is not the comparision here to me saying, RM, you shouldn't lie.

This is about as clear as it gets on the matter of us judging each other. I can't for the life of me figure out where we are commanded to judge each other. Righteousness can be preserved without judgment of others. and further, in V22, we are commanded to keep our beliefs between ourselves and God.

First, the Scripture starts with "Accept those whose faith is weak."

A new Christian. Someone that is new to the faith. Someone who is taking those first few steps.

In 1 Corinthians which follows Romans, Paul talks about giving milk to the new Christians because they were not ready to handle the meat. Similar to giving a newborn baby milk instead of giving him a steak.

But at some point in the baby's/new Christian they should transform into a body that is ready for substance that is not liquid but meat.

Second, don't miss the part that indicates if I am doing something that may cause RM to stumble, even though I may believe it is okay, I should stop it. Not because it is wrong but because my doing it may cause RM to stumble.

Back to those commandments that Jesus gave us, to love others more than we love ourselves. I should love any Christian brother so much that I am giving up things in my life that might cause a Christian brother to stumble.

Contrary to BF's implications, love the questions RM. Keep the discussion going. I LOVE discussing the Word of the Lord.

:confused::confused:

Not sure where this comes from as in the thread and in a PM, I have encourage RM to ask questions and further the discussion.

Just thought it was a bit arrogant (See Romans 1:30) to suggest that no one may speak until you were finished "teaching" your interpretation of the entire chapter. That's all.

Not sure where you got that idea unless it was this statement in the THIRTY SIX POST

If I post chapter at a time, wait for rebuttal, we may not be getting the full picture that Paul is writing to the Roman church about.

That was an explanation to AL on why I did what I did and not some sorta statement that was indicating that no one could comment till I got done.

Didn't think anyone would take it that way since it was the THIRTY SIX POST and about 24 hours after I had posted the first post.

This is spot on. I think we're commanded to hate the sin, but not the sinner. So we can disapprove of something someone does, but we can not know the motivation in their heart. Therefore we cannot and should not judge them.

Yeah, 35 of which were your own. Not a problem. Just thought it was little much. :thumb:

Romans is one of my favorite books, great letter. I'll try to answer this one with my thoughts on it based on my limited understanding.

In this particular passage, Paul is talking about passing judgement on others over "disputable matters". The Church at Rome that he was writing to was made up of both Gentiles and also Jews who were now following Christ. This is key to understanding the letter. These Jews were having a hard time letting go of some of the observances and requirements of the old law, in particular here, the laws about clean/unclean food which were a part of the old law, but were not a condition of Christianity under the church that Jesus established.

I can imagine these churches in the first century having all kinds of problems with this type of thing because of the nature of the followers of the old law and the freedom from it enjoyed by the new covenant. The Jews who had converted were still having a hard time not following the laws they had always followed. The Mosaic Law was very works oriented and regimented and I'm sure it was a monumental adjustment to the more faith based teachings of Jesus.

Paul was saying that these issues (food, circumcision, shaving heads, etc) were not central to salvation and thus were disputable, and we should not judge over them. No need to make an issue out of something inconsequential that will possibly cause another to stumble. If you think it is best to avoid certain foods, let me not stand in your way. And furthermore, let me not eat them either when I am with you. The issue does not affect your salvation, nor mine, so there is not need for contention because that may cause either of us to stumble.

He isn't saying for us not to take a stand on the non-disputable matters of salvation. Christ's death, burial and resurrection is non-diputable. We must hear the word, belive it, repent of our sins, be baptised into Christ and remain faithful. Those are the things Paul preached and taught re: salvation. Paul's teachings on these matters were passionate and I believe he would consider them non-disputable. Paul's own life is a roadmap of how to stand for the truth and teach the Gospel, boldly. He was not a pacifist.

I agree with this.

BF, honest question is teaching judging?

I asked the teaching question and pointed out the comment about those who are weak in faith because it was Paul himself who called out Peter about an issue over the eating of unclean meat. (I believe that was it. Can Watusi or AL or Hats or someone refresh my memory on the exact nature of it?)

Ezekiel 3:16 states "we must warn others of their Sins, even if they don't listen to our warnings we will be Blessed for trying.

Yeah, see my verse right about your Ladies, warning others thru scripture is not judging. As parents we warn our children, are we judging them as we do this. There is a difference.
