Every official will tell you they miss calls. However, they do not miss as many as people think. If you're not watching from the same angle and perspective (vs just following the ball) you're not seeing the same thing. Sometimes the fans will end up with a better angle than the official especially if only 2 officials are working the game.

 

Secondly, unless you know the intimate details of the rulebook you don't know if any official missed a travel (the most commonly misunderstood rule among fans IMO). Unless you know the requirements for legal guarding position you're just guessing most times as to a charge/block call. You might be right sometimes. You're not as right as you think you are though.

 

Fortunately, most officials I know can take the heat. We know its deserved sometimes and accept the times that its not.

The only area you might see differences by region is in regards to judgment. Hand checking is a judgment call. Block/charge is sometimes a judgment call.

I disagree with this. I don't think referees make the travel call as easily as they used to. I think the jump stop has caused a lot of indecision. I see a lot of so called jump stops that just look like traveling to me. This is another thing they implemented to supposedly make it easier on the referee. I rate it up there with the alternate possession that they put in so they don't have to toss the ball on the jump ball but once a game.

That is not traveling unless the pivot foot hits the ground again. Yet it can look awkward so I see officials call it traveling. I have seen many cases where the guy with the ball travels but gets away with it because it is supposedly a jump stop. Let's agree to disagree on this as we are getting way off the topic. I would still like to hear some ideas as to what can be done to improve officiating.

IMO, I think 9th Region officials have always been soft. I really just feel like going to a 9th region game is like watching an 8th grade game. The amount of touch fouls that is called in the 9th region is terrible.

From watching officials call games from Central Ky. to Eastern ky. two situations come to mind the most is when an official in the mid court position makes a call on a play down on the baseline in front of the official in the baseline position. Is this where they do not know their positions on the floor to make the proper calls or just to some , they are going to call the whole floor. IMO this is not being respectful to your fellow official in that position. Also , what ever happened to the 3-sec. lane violation? A call that this year you don't see much. Allowing a big post man to camp in the lane is a big advantage. Input welcome.

The center official's area of responsibility does in fact include part of the lane. He has the half of the lane closest to him.

 

Re: 3 second call. You don't see a lot and that's because the lead official is usually talking to the players to get them out of there. In addition, there are times when the 3 second count is suspended which most fans/coaches do not realize.

How do I know when a jump stop is illegal? When a player clearly does more than what a "jump stop" is supposed to allow.
