Will they let people go through it before they tear it down?

 

No. The doors have now been chained and boarded up. The team that will be tearing it down will begin work soon. I was in it just last weekend and I don't believe its safe enough to let people in.

I was there, great to see Griffith and Turner. Also when Newport Central Catholic came up and Bracken beat them.They were rated one of the top team in the state that year. A lot of great memories from that gym. when I was in grade school I thought the gym was so very big. By the way I graduate in 1972.

When I played down there I seem to remember the bench being the first row of the bleachers. Is that memory correct?

 

Interesting. When I played there, the visitors were behind the basket on the one end (like Vandy). Career high that night - 16 points (as a sophomore no less). Still got beat by about 20. Good memory though.

I think that was NewCath's only loss to a Kentucky opponent heading into the state tournament. They were in the GCL in those days, so they had lost games to Ohio teams, but not to any Ky teams until the first round of the Sweet 16.

 

Not sure of the score of the Male-Bracken Co game, but I was like 6 at the time, so memory has faded. I would assume Male won big, though.

yes we should, and I remember games in the early 60,s. Some of the great players to play in the gym where Hause, Smith, Cummins, Youngman, Hopkins, Coopers and the one we both knew was Smoot and there are many more great players I have not named. It's sad to see the gym in that condition. But Bracken Co. has a nice gym and school now and should be proud of it.

If I remember right didn't Ted Smoot play somewhere in Florida? I remember all those players very well.

Kind of ironic that they are building a justice center in it's place after such a terrible injustice was done to that great old gym.

Great games went on there at the old school, shame it's go to be tore down.:irked:
