How many possible ways can this occur in a game (without the benefit of a technical foul)? I know of one. Reason why I'm asking is this apparently happened in a JV game that was being played during a boys/girls doubleheader I was at.

Nobody has mentioned hitting a 3 while being intentionally fouled. Hit 2 free throws and BOOM === 5 points

I discussed it with a few people, and if I understand the rules correctly, the only way it happens is if there is a flagrant foul away from the shot.

I guess it all depends on how you define a single "play". I've always - in my broadcasts - referred to "three point plays" or "four point plays" as scoring plays performed by a single person... On the other hand, if you define "play" as everything happening on the floor at any given second, then your definition would certainly be the correct one.

 

If the foul is against another player, I would refer to a "five point trip", but not a "five point play", in my broadcasts... But to me, that's more descriptive to my audience, and let's them know that the points weren't all scored by the same player.

 

But I think we're kind of splitting hairs here, honestly.

 

About the only scenario I can think of - adhering to my personal definition of a "play" - would be if player A fouled player B in the act of making a three pointer and knocked him down, and then (say, as the two were on the floor), gave him a smack to the face or something and incurred a technical to boot. The player who was fouled then could, in theory, score 5 points on the same "play", after he shot the personal foul and technical foul shots.
