January 9, 201016 yr Interesting. Sign Chapman and see what we can do. When July rolls around, if we're out of it, send Arroyo & Harang packing. Assuming we could make a deal that would not require us eating their salaries, it'd have a minimal effect financially. Then we'd be left with Cueto, Chapman, Volquez, Bailey and Lehr/Maloney/whoever. I love the idea, but there's no way we throw that type of $$ around.

There's a non-financial reason the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets have decreased interest in him. He's got major control and maturity issues. Most of those teams feel his lack of control will limit him to being a relief pitcher.......and that's a lot of money for a setup man. Sure, they may be wrong and he might end up being a good starter but do the Reds have the resources to take that kind of gamble?

For every Randy Johnson there are 100 guys with a live arm that never get it under control and flame out........Supposedly the Jays have offered him $23 million, not $20 million as I thought earlier. Do you want the Reds to make that kind of gamble. There's no way he's ready to be in a major league rotation this season. There's a reason the Yankees and Red Sox, who have some of the best scouting departments in the business, have backed off of him. Do you really want the Reds to gamble 1/3 of their payroll on the chance that he's a once in a generation talent instead of what most guys like him end up being?

January 9, 201016 yr Chapman isn't worth the $20 million, but the guy is a freak. A 21 year old lefty who has been clocked at 102. That doesn't come around very often. The Yankees & Red Sox can afford not to pursue him immediately because, if he pans out, they'll get him in 4-5 years.

It wasn't until he was 29 that Johnson corralled his control issues; in 1993 (the year he threw over the head of John Kruk at the All-Star Game), Johnson struck out 308 and walked 99, and he went on to win five Cy Youngs. At age 21, he was raw, but greatness was possible because of his tool set. I'm not an insider, so I cannot read further. But, the point remains that Chapman is young & has a very special skill set.

I know he had an offer from the Red Sox for $15.5 million before they pulled it. Reportedly the offer from the Blue Jays is $23 million.....lets just split the differenct and say $20 would sign him......Would you be for the Reds spending $20 million for him?
January 9, 201016 yr No, but try to add him. He's already been offered $15.5 million and turned it down, its going to take more than that to sign him. They aren't getting him at a discount.
