Only two officials for the HHS v Dixie game also, and it was a very physical game. I know other schools have three officials for every game. Two officials for a mens varsity game seems to be asking a lot from referees who have a tough enough job anyways. HHS only has 3 officials on their Friday night matchups. Maybe the NRBOA should demand there be three officials for all varsity games.

 

The NRBOA would LOVE TO WORK THREE MAN ON EVERY GAME. Unfortunately, the KHSAA and then the Ninth Region Board of Control has left it up to the schools.

 

If you want to see three officials at your game, talk to your head coach and your athletic director. It only takes one call to the Assigning Secretary and three officials will be on every game.

 

That being said....

 

If you want top level officials to call their best game, they need to work it consistently. You can't have an official work 10 out of 20 games as two man, possibly the whole month of February, then expect perfection for the districts in March. Effort is made to get tournament officials last several games as a three, but it can't always happen.

The same can be said for the regular season. I witnessed one of the most respected and decorated officials in the Ninth line up on the wrong side of the floor for a throw in (two man). His partner covered by inbounding the ball, then running all the way across the floor. After the game, the only explanation was, "I was in three man mode."

You also can't expect the players to adjust and readjust to having two or three officials on the floor each night. While their adjustment should be easire than the officials', it is still called differently with three.

Some states require 3-man at the JV level as well as varsity.

In NKY soccer the assigner insisted to the powers that be that a three man was the only way varsity games would be played unless there was not enough refs to call the games. I know BB is not considerd a contact sport but I beg to differ. I realise not all varsity games demand three refs but high level boys games and a few of the girls game should have three person crew.
