.30-06 with 180 gr trophybonded bullet would be ample. Same bullet in .300WSM would be my choice.

 

If I were to hunt bear in our state, I'd more than likely take my .460S&Wmag shooting 200gr hornady SST's. Good out to 200yds but a handful to shoot.

I sure would like to shoot that 50 cal. A kill shot at over a mile really turns me on. The last time I looked it was $5 a shot. You are right about the shot placement. I preach this all the time to the young kids. 300 mag may be the ticket.

My bear hunting buddy just bought a S&W 50 cal revolver for a close in shot on Mr. Black bear,I am stuck with my S&W .357 that I don't plan on using on a bear unless all else fails. Very,very nice revolver you have there!

My buddy just found a place in Pike Co. that is reclaimed strip mine land owned by a relative. He says it is a two mile long table top flat area with new woods on it. The owner says it is a magnet for wildlife and the bears love it. This my force me to buy a new rifle. My 270 could get the job done but I would like a little more punch. Guides in Canada like the .308. I have never hunted them myself but one of my hunting buddies got one in Canada. I love southeastern KY. Looks like a killer road trip.

In Pike Co. near Robinson Creek. I have not been there yet, but it belongs to my buddies relatives. It is a reclaimed strip mine that was replanted 30 years ago with hardwoods and pines. He says its 2.5 miles long of table top flat land and covers 2000 acres. This is hard to beleive but he has been there and its for real. All we need is a few cases of Bud Lite for the owners and we are in! Thanks for offering other places to hunt, but a place this size will keep me busy for years. Should be well worth the 5 hour drive!

Looks like the bear hunt went a little better this year. As far as I know, the KDFWR was only allowing for two black bears to be harvested again this year, and both were taken: a 265 pound male in Pike County on Saturday, and another 280 pound male in Harlan County on Sunday.

The quota this year is 10 bears or 5 females, which ever happens first. Last year there was only one killed.
