I expected to see Boone do more. I wasn't overly impressed. I think Earls serves them much better playing the post but he seems to shoot outside most of the time. His money should be inside.

 

Earls has never really played a dominant inside game. The kid that should be banging inside with quickness and strength didn't see much time last night. Boone was out hustled for a majority of the game and once again gave up some key second chance shots by not rebounding. I too, expected to see more from Boone, but it's still early.

The young man has proven he's simply more comfortable outside. He's done it for four years so I don't see him suddenly changing. I assume Coach realizes where he's more comfortable and works his schemes that way.

Absolutely. You can't predict what he would have done in the second half based on his first half. The bottom line is that he is a very good basketball player who is a difference maker. Rematch should be fun.

 

I have seen Stauffer play many times, and he can be an offensive threat when you allow him to be. Boone played aggresive defense on him and contested a majority of his shots. Also Boone had more Big Men to stay fresh on defending him if needed. I think Volett played well last night in his position. The "if" word is the biggest two letter word I know, so I prefer not to use it as an excuse in deciding game outcomes.JMO

I agree that Earls' bread and butter should be inside, with his wide body and height. He has a soft shooting touch for a big man, but he doesn't help Boone from the 3-point arc, IMHO. In addition, he doesn't put the ball on the floor well enough to stray too far outside. Boone needs rebounding and inside play from their big men. After all, how many 6'6" post players are on most teams? Since he is more of a catch and shoot player, the post would be an easier location for that type of play. He will be a good contributor this year for Boone. He just had an off game. Boone will need good balance in their scoring. I don't think any one player is going to carry them.

 

I thought this was a hard fought district game, as they should be. Ryle is no pushover.

I agree he seems more comfortable outside. Boone's coaches seem to be giving him more flexibility this year in that regard. I do think the majority of his points will come 5 feet from the basket.

There are a lot of good big kids in the area who do not play the post. I am afraid that good down low post players are a thing of the past. All of the big kids that I have coached want to get out around the perimeter and shoot. They don't seem to want to get on the block and get physical like the old days.

I also think Montgomery did well. I think he could end up being Boone's 5th starter.

He did. Popp sat the first quarter of the game and did not start. Montgomery started in his place. Gabbard, Earls, Popp, and Cotton will be usual starters this year, IMO, and Montgomery, Brown, Lay, or Schutze will be the 5th starter, depending on the situation and their play this year.

 

Montgomery had a nice uncontested dunk on a run-out after Gabbard made a good steal at half court and flipped him the ball.

 

I thought Cotton and Popp, played well for Boone, and Montgomery was a solid contributor as well.

Not in it so far. He played JV and did not dress varsity tonight. Zane McQueary did well in the JV game and sat varsity and got in briefly. Josh Burgess also played pretty well in the JV game and sat varsity. Crabtree (6'9") also plays JV and sits varsity.

Brown did pretty well for the time he was in. Got the ball down low, he either scored or drew some good fouls from the Raider defenders and as usual rebounded well. He also played great defense which has been his weakness in the past. Needs more time on the floor IMO.

Brown and Montgomery both played well. Brown will draw a lot of fouls, and converting a good percentage of those would be a big help to Boone.

Is it time for a change at Ryle? Coach Mullins is 0-8 against Boone and 2-3 against Conner, the two wins being last year when Conner didn't have the greatest team. They have lost to Boone by an average of 13.63 points per game. This is not acceptable in Union. They have to get better coaching. I think that this is a pivotal year for Mullins and if they don't fair better then this could, and should, be his last year with the Raiders.

I was really impressed with the way Ryle played against Boone. Everyone wants to win, but the loss of Stauffer early in the game stacked the chips against the Raiders. They never gave up and continued to make it a great game. Also, if I am not mistaken, Boone was a preseason pick to be one of only two 9th region teams with a chance to beat Holmes. Honestly, I thought Ryle played harder and better than Boone and it came down to the last possesion. I just wouldn't be calling for a resignation of the coach over that loss.
